I do the same, block of foam under the tail and have a velcro strap bolted to the floor only I used two of the g/f's ponytail holders for bungees. I doubled them and run them through the tail gear and run the velcro through them so it still has some give if I hit a big pothole. The foam is just to cusion the bounce. I tried just strapping the tailgear down with the velcro and it ripped the t/g off of my last plane. The gearlegs just look like they hold the plane too rigidly to the floor. They need some kind of suspension to let the plane "float" while the trailer is bouncing all over the road.

What do you guys do for the front of the plane? I'm going to Nall this year with my converted pop up trailer. Just hoping not to have a bunch of balsa sticks after a 750 mile trip!

I also use the foam block under the tail idea. I got a bunch of those foam pads for kneeling on (no jokes) for $1 a piece at the hardware store. I glued them together with 3M spray glue (77?) and also made vertical pieces that slide inbetween my pull pull cables to stay in place. For the front, I found a rubbermaid stepstool at wal mart that is just the right width to span the gear plate and tall enough to get the main wheels 1 inch off the ground. I put a nice piece of foam on the top of it as well. I use a long flat adjustable bungee through the wingtube and don't have to strap it down very tight. The stand takes all of the support. I've used this setup for two years including a Nats trip, Tuscon, and Joe Nall with excellent results. I even forgot to strap the tail down for 200 miles and nothing moved. My 2 cents.

I use the Negative block from the turtle deck of my Dalton kits... cut the last 12" off and velcro to the floor. Works great.

Tell me about it. My new trailer definitely isn't as pretty as that one was.

Im gonna have to say gearlegs.com. They are expensive, but when the plane is strapped down to them..its not going anywhwere. If my trailer to roll on its side..the plane would still be secure...thats how solid they are.

I use a foam blocks and cut a vee in them. It's a giant version of what machinists use to set a round shaft on. I use foam rubber that I got at a Foam Rubber store, look in the yellow pages but I like that fabric store idea. I use the blocks to set the plane on the work bench, my van or on the ground at the field. I used two thicknesses of foam to make the foam thicker and glued it with 3M77 spray glue from home depot. Years ago thats the adhesive we used when sheeting a foam wing.
I've used these on several 300 to 900 mile trips and they work great, I don't tie the plane down, but I use a big Ford van not a trailer |
