This took place 12 years ago (1994). There have been many threads on the net about it. This one is pretty good with info from informed people, some who flew B52s and some who were actually stationed at Fairchild AFB.

I am not making excuses... but it takes a special kind of brain and human to fly this stuff...much less jets... You cant be 100% normal and do this... but... but... the USAF should stop it before it gets out of hand..

I would be curious to know how many hours that pilot had in that plane. It looked to me like he didn't know what he was doing and didn't know the plane was not capable of turning like a fighter jet.

As a B-52 driver myself, I can shed a little light. The pilot was not inexperience, he was a Lt Col, had as many hours in it or more than anyone else, was the chief of stan-eval (the guys who are supposed to be the experts). His problem was his flying abilities exceeded the capabilities of the plane. Numerous times in the past he had done crazy, stupid things with the B-52, like ridgeline crossings at 30' with people out there taking pictures, etc. Finally, his crew refused to fly with him, so the senior leadership of the base at Fairchild decided to fly with him to see if he was actually dangerous, and that day he overbanked and the plane went dynamic and went in, as you can see in the video. Almost every USAF pilot sees this video once a year as a reminder of not being a cowboy and doing stupid things in airplanes, there are good reasons for the warnings and limitations in the tech order. Its like everything else in life, lessens are most often learned the hard way. I wouldnt classifly everyone that flys your tax dollars as idiots though, all of us go through a great magnitude of training to be the safest, and most effecient pilots there are out there. This type of flying demands more than just flying from point A to B while kicking back and eating doughnuts and coffee.

The pilot was very experienced with flying hours well into the thousands but he and his crew were known as hotdogs. There was another video of him flying over a hill top and clearing it by like 50ft! Theres actually a long article that was written concerning a break down in higher command because nothing was ever really done to stop his antics. I wouldn't go as far as calling them idiots but they're luck certainly did run out. It's a shame too...the families of the crew members were there to see it first hand. Yeah...what he said above. We posted at almost the same time but thats about it in a nutshell. Here's a link to the video. Scroll down to B-52 crash documentry. http://www.alexisparkinn.com/aviatio...s.htm#MILITARY Last edited by Geojungle99; 04-30-2006 at 01:16 AM. |

I do not remember if it was the old DISCOVERY WINGS channel or the history channel, but there was a program thathighlighted this event. They stated that this particular pilot was very experienced, but liked to be in the spot light by showing off......The thing that is disturbung about it is that it took an event like this to open their eyes.

One of the first signs of him being an idiot should have been when his crew would not fly with him. If he's scaring the hell out of the crew who are also trained to be in that plane something should tell you there is something wrong with the way the pilot is flying. just my .02.

If I remember the public report correct. I believe this was Lt Col Holland aborting a landing or lowpass over the runway because another jet was taking off.
