I am building a 260 right now. I decided to use a Saito 220 in hopes of keeping this one real light. I am curious to hear if anyone else has used this combination.

I have one with a BME 50. Same wieght as DA 50. I put the rudder servo in the rear, moved the gas tank down under the wingtube, i have one RX with ED Powerbus optocoupler etc, 3 NiMH batts, one for RX, one for servos, and one on ignition.
All supplied hardware is being used, tank, wheels, everything, no problems there either. I did swap out the tailwheel setup for one of my own. The 3 batts are right behind the wingtube. BME 50 with pitts muff has plenty o power, 1/3 to 1/2 throttle hovers (and thats a 2500 above sea level) with lots of puch out power. 22x8 (best size for torque) zinger prop. I have sealed the hinge lines but i too get occasional flutter from the ailerons. I use futabs 94oz std servos with no problems.
My plane wieghs in at 15 and 1/2 lbs. I dont see how anyone else with a DA 50 or BME 44 or 50 etc, could weigh any less with out carbonfiber tubes and so on. My plane will float in like a trainer (but slower no $#!+) on landings as well with just a couple or few clicks of throttle it also balanced out without a spinner, w/spinner i had to add 1 and 1/2 OZ of weight under the tail. Tracks and rolls very axial and true, 3d's awesome as well. The covering has been anything but consistant. I also glued the rear stabs to the fuse with the tube in for rigidity. I found the rear stab tube screw attachmant setup to be less than desireable. That was kind of weird.
Gas power is definatly clean and easy on this plane. Barely any weight difference between saito 180 or 220 and 50cc BME or DA , All weigh just under three LBS unarmed.
I would like to see how anyone with a 50cc engine, "Stock" plane out of the box weighs any less than 15LBS ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABull****AAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA!?

But seriously, let me know!

I have one w/DA50, JR8411's throughout, fromeco batts at 6.0vlts all supplied hardware, LOCTITE EVERYTHING, and I recommend the graphtech landing gear it is much stronger than suplied gear. 23x8 menz, the plane is a rocket going straight up. I also am having the issue with the tail loosening in fuse tube, will probably use epoxy and make it permanent as I never remove stabs anyway. fun plane flies great but a little unforgiving when doing 3D, but that should make me a better pilot.

Just purchased one of these planes. My target weight is under fifteen pounds. I will let you know what I come up with.

I put one together with a Saito 180 and Lithium Ion RX pack. I think I was around 11.5-12lbs.

In fact I saw that plane again at Tony's shop this weekend. The new owner is putting a DA 50 on it. I think its too little a plane for a gas engine IMHO. You need to keep it as close to 12lbs as possible AUW for a good flier.

i had mine with a G62( yes it may be a little more heavy but i have 2 of them and just feel i like them better, call me old school)i had two sub c 6v batt. with 24oz main tank and a 24oz smoke tank and all the trimings and it came in around 15.5lbs flys like a top and will do anything i want and have enough power to go from tall tuching to a dot stright up at 3/4 thro and never think twice. every body is worring about getting in under 15lbs, its not something to worrie about with this plane. all you need to do is inspect the joints and go have fun with it.

I´ve been reading that this airplane with a DA 50 is too heavy for a long time, actually before I purchased mine, I have it with a DA 50 all stock, I took care of weight when applying e poxy and such... mine wieghts 14-14.5 punds....dont remember the exact weight, but it flies awesome, I like a lot the plane, and I dont think that its heavy, or very heavy as some guys say...I love mine, it tracks good, good 3d and floats grateat.

I guess it depends on how you fly, as far as weight goes,if hovering and vertical performance are what you are into thats fine. I don't think this plane would fly slow "harrier" type manuvers very well at 15.5lbs. This is only a 78" plane.

Yes slow and fast is pilot perspective. I will admit. Trying to keep the plane light as possible while satisfying specific pilot intended performance is the main concern. Even if it is with a G62 (wow). Not to start an argument, but the lighter the aircraft with respect to it's wing area will make the transtion to a post stalled condition easier. But for the price and capabilities of the aircraft, it is well worth the sacrifice to acheive specific intended performance.

Well, I just finished my Extra 260. I am excited to mention official weight is 13lbs 10ozs with a 3MM TOC 53cc. I did not have to do a balancing act. The battery and regulator is eight inches back from recommended, and the aircraft balanced perfect for me. My CG is between 5.25"-5.5". I am tail heavy, but that's my personal preference. I have had other planes with the same weight and almost the same wing area, but they were with an OS 160. I think it is misguided intuition leading others to beleive that a 50cc motor is too heavy for this plane. Two pounds under max advertised weight should provide adequate performance without incurring a wing loading penalty. The proper choice of engine, aircraft, radio, and power system is key.

Pics coming soon
