Default Electric IMAC Plane?

Question is, if it was affordable and packs were light enough, would you change to electric power for IMAC?

Just out of interest is anyone toying around with the idea of building an electric IMAC plane, be it 2.1 to 3M in size?

I'm really interested and some people have done this for the EMAC series. I just don't have the money...

Yeah I find the motors and the ESCs are affordable but its the LiPos that are the killer in price and weight.
Having said that the LiPos are getting cheaper thanks to the likes of Hobby City and their Rhino packs.

I have both an electric plane for EMAC and a gas plane for IMAC. My electric plane is a 30% Yak, it's like having a 40% plane for the EMAC series and my gas plane is a 40% Comp-Arf 260. If your planning on flying IMAC, go with gas, my 2 cents. PS, I voted NO, on your poll.

I voted No as well. Cost isn't the only reason I don't like electric in GS planes

I vote yes, but simply to take a lot of noise issues and preserve out flying sites, not because I think they would be better.

I agree with mick, but it would also take some money out of the hands of those greedy oil companies.

If I could have an electric car with the same or better performance than my petrol car then I would have one. The technology is there but oil companies rule the world and squash any hope of it being affordable any time soon.

I'll get down of my soap box now.

I truly believe that technology will get to the point where electric flight for "GS" will out perform current petrol engines.

Having said that I may be an old man in wheel chair when it happens, but it will happen.

It already does, just the cost of such a setup is twice maybe three time that of a petrol setup. In an electric setup you get bucket loads more torque, get near instant spool up, can swing bigger props, it quiet and enviro friendly.

The worlds governments and media always crap on about cutting carbon emissions, global warming, etc , etc. But how much money do they spend on developing the technology we already have so we can stop burning oil and coal and make green power affoardable??????? Not much!!!

Well i have already ordered a 2m electric pattern plane, so i can see it happening in the near future for me. My Imac Plane will soon be the only combustion powered plane i own.
(Anyone want to buy a YS160 powered Cyclone, ha ha)

There's a few people flying electric in pattern now.
It's alot easier to justify electric over glow, in fact i'm certain glow will fade over the next couple of years in everything up to 2m.

The big cost, like always, is setup.

Once you're setup the price difference on a 2m size plane and under isn' t that much difference really. And electric is alot better on equipment and airframes. Besides if it was all about saving money i'd sell my planes and take up jogging.

Gas is obviously a little harder to justify being cheaper to run, but battery prices are getting better and better.

Hobby City have some Zippy-H batteries that alot of people are getting good results from.

The only issue is that you need a generator to charge the batteries at most places........so you still have noise.....and you still burn gas.

It will happen......It's just when

Apparently the hardest thing to get use to is the lack of noise......try flying with ear-muffs on.
