Also at 7v, he can provide more amps to 17-18 starving servos than at 5.9v.
I even would worry about him overloading the system by drawing more than 40 amps which can easily happen but its his choice and he knows his style of flying more than me!
Um, the A123's are 6.4 to 6.6 volts, and they are rated at up to 60c - FAR more than what Li-LEAD are rated at. And they hold a more stable voltage under load and throughout their charge cycle.
Bottom line, I have yet to see a non-Duralite-sponsored person post that li-LEADs are all that and a bag of chips.
If LiMN were all the rave, there'd be 100+ page threads discussing them...

Duralite makes the liMN batteries that Reza is pushing, and Reza is sponsored by Duralite.

Just a clarification. When I say I worry about him overloading the system I mean the PB as it is rated at 40 amps. LIMN will hold a higher voltage under 20-30 amp spikes based my eagle tree readings, I have no data at 50 amp or so! They are excellent batteries and for his set up and application makes the most sense, enough said! and yes I am sponsored by Duralite and many others but my opinion given to him that has nothing to do with you is solely for his best. You can use anything you want.

Has anyone beside Bill Hempel, flown models with the 3W 342 engine before? I've seen some vids of the 52% Edge Bill has, but I haven't seen him hover it. I asked Bill if the 342 would give enough power to hover the Extra, but he was not sure. So, does anyone have a clue if it will??

I sure hope it does

iahawkflyer, this is not an RC motor it is designed to accept a generator in the back, seriously.

Bad idea I could get distracted in a hover, start dreaming, forget about the plane and crash.

Skywalker, the most common failures in my airplanes, have been, batteries and servos, plenty of redundancy in this plane.

Tikka, based on my experience with the 275 I think it will have just enough power to hover if we can keep under 85# , the 50% weighs 61 Lbs dry but close to 70# wet with smoke and it hovers and will pull out of a hover with ease, of course these are huge airplanes and we can't compare them to the 150 class motor on 40% airplanes, the power to weight ratio here is a lot higher.

jmoesdad, I will be honest, I am rtrying not to think about the this subject but here is a small list you can add up
3W 342
Cans and headers
17 8711
2 8611
1 BH 60% Extra 260
Shipping
Propellers
Spinner
Smoke system
1000 miles of wires
2 batteries for ignitions
2 batteries for receiver
Powebox Royal complete
Linkages for 19 servos
19 Servo arms
Wingbags
12X radio
2 receivers
2 tires ( $ 80 )
And there is much more that I don't remember, if you add the above, it comes out at around $15,000 which is what I anticipated but I have a feeling the number will be higher.
Thanks for your question now I am off to sleep I will continue the thread when I wake up in 10 years .
