Snap, I was thinking more of momentary loads drawing too many amps out of the Ions, and hitting the receiver with a heavy drop in voltage (brownout). I'm going with twin 5200s on my Edge but on the big mama, Lithium Polymers might handle the heavy servo loads without as much voltage drop.

How good of a SNAPASAURUSBADAAASSSS video do I have to make to get a chance to fly this thing?
![]() I still haven't installed the sticker you sent me. I haven't found a plane worthy of it yet

I would use A123 batteries, they can take anything, and you can recharge them with 10 Amps, which will give you 10 minutes of charging. I would connect all the red and black wires from the servos directly in to the batteries, and the signal cables directly in to the powerbox/ receicer. And use a separate battery for the receiver. That way you wont fry it. And you will never be short of juice to the servos.
I will order a 60% Extra when they are back in stock, just need to fin a way to get it here. Great build, Snap, I have followed the other big bird thread you had, and it is a great inspiration for me. You are the man, and I would love to meet you and the other guys some time in the future. Fly hard

Snap,
On the batteries... If you put all four (two batteries in paralell) you still will be short on amperage for that amout of servos. My plane took 21 amps to fly pattern.(6 8611s and 8 8711s) The two fromcos only delivered 16 amps. When I had fromcos in it I had aileron servos stalling. I switched to two thunderpower 5000 mill. amp packs( I believe they where capable of discharging at 60 amps each)each and saw a tremendous difference in the servo power. Plane looks great! I can't wait to see you at the Nall.

I have always used the Li Ion with no issues at all so I figured why chang something that's working, it loooks like I may have to reconsider this strategy here, I will be considering the A123 and Lipos, I have no choice. Thanks for the compliment and thank god that there is still few people with an open mind about big airplanes as lately it was getting tougher for me to find clubs where I can fly Giant scale airplanes as old farts (3D haters) seem to be taking over, believe it or not I have to drive 2 hours each way to fly these planes.

Mike, Elie,
I am totally with you on the 5000 MaH LiPo packs or if your into A123's then they are OK as well. The Li Ion packs will drop out with that many servos almost without doubt. Given that I know how Snap likes to fly he sure as heck uses some serious control inputs and lots of servo power. I dont know how you would rig your setup with a power-box to use twin large packs for the flying surfaces and a single pack dedicated to the receiver only. But that certainly is the best way to power this thing up. Also Elie going with two 5000 Mah LiPos is a whole lot less weight that doubling up with Li Ions. I am also sure the boys at Fromeco could knock you up some custom A123 packs. |

Elie,
FlightPower makes a complete set-up with 7.4V Li-po's & Regulators, hudge power. I think DSP can help you out on a package. Last edited by zzw26n; 02-13-2009 at 09:23 AM. |

Elie, have you thought of dividing the plane into "front and back" halves in respects to the radio/battery install? In other words, have two 5200mah Li-ions, one or two Rx, a power box of sorts and all the tail servos located in the tail. And then another similar set up up front for all the aileron/throttle/choke servos.
With a standard set up, you will probably see large voltage drop in the 6 - 8 foot servo wires going to the tail. If you separate the front from the back, you could get away with much smaller extentions and even all the rudder servos plugged directly in the power box. If balance is an issue with a fore/aft set up, then just have the batteries upfront and run heavy gauge wire to the tail only where it feeds they Rx/power box/ servos back there. Just a thought. |

OH MY GAWD... that thing is huge.
I agree... but also once the batteries can keep up with the aperage, the regs wont. I would highly recommend the A123's, and no regs. Or you'll have to run 4 regs. matt
