Default Damaged Canisters

I need some HELP guys.... I have a set of canisters that were damaged. The pipes bent back and broke half way and there is a hole where the pipe attaches to the can. Wanted to get them welded but I was told that the material is too thin to weld. Has anyone ever had a set repaired, really dont have the $ to buy another set. These go to a DA 150.... Thanks

Shawn

A good tig welding setup will work I have repaired a set once and they are still holding together. If you also have dents in them you can take them out as well here is how, you plug the exit and plug the entrance but you need to drill and tap a thread for a air compressor hook up into the header side of the can make sure you put a hose clamp around both as well so they don't fire out at you. You then put around 60-80 psi heat it up with a propane torch very easy on the heat and they come out.

JB weld wont work.Find a good welder with a TIG machine and get them welded. It cost me $30 to have a set of damaged cans repaired. Then no worries about JB Weld falling off.

Get a bernzomatic MAPP gas torch from lowes / home depot for 45 ish bucks. You can braze the tube back on with the torch and a silver brazing rod, all included in the kit. Pays for itself after 1 or 2 reapirs depending.

This thing :

A MAPP gas torch and a stick of silver solder will hold just about anything together.... even I can do it!

The silver solder torch will work perfectly fine, here are a few pointers.

1. Clean all parts to be joined to unfinished metal

2. Buy some plummers torch flux put it on the parts to be joined

3. Make a rig to hold the parts in place that you are going to weld, I use a block of wood and some wood clothes pins. Position the stuff as it will be once it is welded up.

4. Set your flame on the torch correctly, just follow the drections for getting a brazing flame. It may take you a few tries but get the torch as close as you can.

> If when you touch it to the metal it is layin down heavy black soot you have either to much MAPP gas or not enough oxygen. Too much oxygen will blow out your flame.

5. Heat the patrs to be joined until they are cherry red hot

6. Heat the brazing rod tip unitl it begins to melt... then quickly

7. Re-heat parts to be joined to cherry red, place brazing rod on joint you are heating up, it should ment like solder and flow towards the heat of your touch. This means if you want to braze across a joint heat the whole joint up but place the rod on the opposite side of your torch. This way the heat in the joint melts the rod ( but hit it with the torch as needed) and the solder flows across the joint to your flame.

8. Once the solder has flowed and you have a good bead around the joint remove the heat and let cool to room temp, no dipping in water - Bad.

9. Get a dremmel grinder and clean up your weld if you want to otherwise you are done.

> it may take you 2 or 3 passes to get it correct. To remove solder in the wrong place just hit it with the torch unitl it flows then use a piece of scrap metal to pick it up. Also you can just grind it away with the dremmel sanding drum attachment.

> Bottom line its really really easy just take your time you will be an expert by the end of the afternoon. It is a great tool to have in your shop.

those instructions are fine for copper pipe but not aluminum. The aluminum will sag and run before you ever see it glow. Common flux won't work with silver solder and aluminun. Also when you clean parts don't use a ferrous wire wheel or pats will never solder together. Use a brass wire wheel. Hope this helps.

I build-up a spot on a muffler so I could drill and tap a smoke nipple. I used that aluminum brazing rod which is specifically made for aluminum. One of those ones you would see on an infomercial. It worked though

Sorry it was late night the aluminum part got by me. Yes you can use the torch for aluminum you must use an aluminum flux core rod it is aluminum in color and is included int he bernzomaitc mapp gas kit. This is the rod chart that tells u what to use. You need to be more gental with the heat as not to melt the aluminum on your can. Just go slow.

Aluminum wont get cherry red before it melts
