Guys, I have a question I am sure somebody has asked over the years. I am building a Top Flite P-47. The problem is that I am having a real dilemma figuerign out what engine to put in the nose of this bird. It calls for a 41-70cc engine. I have researched for a while and I just cannot pick out the right engine for the job. They are either really heavy and not enough power or are really really expensive. For the most part people are putting g-62s in the front...but that is not only a heavy engine it is underpowered. The only good thing about it is the price. If you guys have any better suggestions that would be great! I thought about a DA-50 as well, but what else is out there. Lets just say that a ZDZ-80 is a little above my budget after just graduating from college... So anything under that I am able to do.

Most are using the G-62 because warbirds need nose weight. Warbirds that are scale have the fuse built around a large radial engine. When you put a lite 2 stroke in its place, weight typically has to be added to compensate.
If you go on RCU there is a 200+ page build thread of a bunch of us building the TF P-47. All sorts of engines there. I also posted a build thread here on FG on my TF-P47. I'm using the 3W-55 on mine with a pitts muffler. You have lots of choices though in the 50cc range. DA, DL, XYZ, 3W, EVO, G62, MT etc etc. I wouldn't put an 80cc on the TF-P-47, it won't need that much power.

I agree with most of what Sweetpea says except the last statement about power
I live and fly at about 3200 feet ASL. A little extra power at this alltitude is a nice safety net... besides that stick on the left side of the radio does not always have to be in the fully forward position !I hope to test my theory later this year with my TF P-47. The 3W80 fits nicely but I had to have the pitts style muffler customized a bit to fit inside the cowling. I would much rather put a larger engine (ie. weight) out front than a bunch of lead.... my .02 cents

I re-read your orignal post and forgot about your budget concerns. I know money can be tight (especially now) but to me, reliability and quality has to be the first priority when building such a large airplane. All the best with your project
