Default RE rudder question

I’m thinking of getting an inexpensive RE sailplane to see if I like hunting for thermals but I don’t know if I should put the rudder on the right stick or the left one (mode 2 transmitter). I learned to fly years ago on a 3-channel trainer that had the rudder on the right stick but I’ve been flying aileron planes for a long time now and always do rudder-coordinated turns, so using the left stick makes sense also. Is there a standard for this within the RE or RES sailplane community?
Thanks a lot.

Do what ever feels most comfortable for you. I set RE gliders up with the rudder on the aileron stick, but i fly mode 1 .

Thanks for getting back to me.
I think I'm going to put the rudder on the left stick and see how it goes. I don't want to get in to the habit of only using the right stick, so this ought to help with that.
Thanks a lot.

sorry i didnt catch this sooner, as he said both techniques work fine, i fly both methodes, on the the re planes i fly only on the right stick so i can fly with one hand, for these types of planes the right stick rudder will make the plane act like it does with light ailirons so breaking the habit is normally not an issue,, just wondering which glider your getting? i would suggest the vista 2m from tower hobbies, its cheap and thermals great, i flew the electric version on a 2 minit motor run for almost an hour last summer a few times, great bang for your buck. good luck, and once you ride a thermal youll be hooked, if we can be of help with learning the art let us know!

This is an interesting question, and actually timely. I haven't flown my sailplanes since last spring. They are set up using the right stick for rudder. I spent most of the summer really working on coordinated turns with my power planes and didn't realize how much I had gotten used to the rudder on the left stick. I

t really got driven home to me at the E-Fest. I had picked up one of the micro vapors. They are just a 3 channel, and using the supplied transmitter I really had to think about what I was doing when flying. It was not second nature like the planes I'm used to. I found that I was constantly trying to use the left stick to get the damn thing to turn. Saturday night a group of us was flying the vapors in the lobby of the hotel and one of the guys there noticed that I was constantly fighting mine. He let me fly his on his regular Tx that had a very unique mix. He had the rudder mixed to the ailerons. The plane still had the rudder on the right stick but mixed the left stick at 100% to the right. That way either stick would activate the rudder. It worked great. I have since gotten a Spektrum module for my radio and have the same mix. I find when I'm flying I use both sticks just like I'm making a coordinated turn. It is amazing how much difference this makes. I am thinking that I will probably use the same mix come spring with my RE only sailplanes.

The nice part about using this mix is that you don't try to relearn, or go back to bad habits you used to have. You can still fly like you are used to and get very good results.

Just another idea.

put the primary roll control on the Aileron Channel.... it just screw you up if you don't.. (RE gliders have a lot of dihedral... so the rudder effectively rolls the plane)

imho

I thought the same thing when I first saw it. I really like it on the vapor. It's worth a try on my other RE only planes this year.

Wizard, I really like your mix idea and I think I’m going to try it that way. Let me see if I’ve got the idea straight: Rudder on the aileron control (right stick), with a 100% mix from the rudder control (left stick) to the ailerons? As to which plane I’m going to get, I haven’t really decided yet. I have looked at the vista and a couple of others, including the multiplex easyglider-pro. However, I’m also looking at the new multiplex blizzard, which would make the RA question moot as its an inexpensive REA warmliner rather then a floater, although they say it can thermal reasonably well.
Thanks a lot.

I've thought about this plane myself, although I'm no longer seriously considering it. Here's a link to a good thread on RCG: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=814980
I'm looking at the Gem or Filip on NeSail; they cost more but I think they may be a lot closer to what I'm looking for.
