Default Dynamic Soaring

G,day guys. i thought some of you might be interested in having a look at this video of Joe Manor setting a new Dynamic Soaring (DS for short) world record of 371MPH. Its a long vid but worth the look. We have been doing a fair bit of it over here but not to that kind of speed.

LOL yaeh there was a bit of carbon in that. Its funny when you try to explain the concept to people that you are actually flying on the downwind side of the hill. We use EPP foamies a lot at the rough sites over here, they bounce real good, dust em off and throw em out agian, still good for well over 100MPH. Heres a vid of one of the guys I fly with at our premier location, only got 171mph that day in light winds.

Yeah Its a lot harder then it looks. I thought it would be easy just going round and round in circles. Not so.

There's supposed to be a great DS spot in Frankfort, KY. The local glider club goes up there frequently.

It's not as hard as people make it out to be. if you get a good "learning spot" (steep backside) you'll be having fun in an afternoon. I've been casually DS'ing since about 2006 and I've never crashed DSing... crashed every other way imagineable, just never DSing..

Get yourself a good foamy DSer, like an L2 Airframes JW.

Oh, and it's 399 now.

I'll have to check again, but believe it was 419MPH, set at mars in lovely So Cali not much more than ten miles from my house. The roof tiles were damn near coming off the house that week!
I intend to go check it out/help out if I can soon! I've done night combat there before, and one thing to say is that even around midnight, the wind is still cranking! 60MPH to 70MPH wind is not uncommon there....

they dont call'em leadsleds for no reason... chucken a plane off a cliff in 60mph winds seems insane to most but with the proper gear its very doable.. wish I had a place closer.. some one needs to put a keychain spy cam on a fast mover on a slope!

It's one thing to chuck it off the slope at 60MPH-
It's a totally different thing to fly it on the back side at 60. It seems insane because it IS! LOL!
