Default Whistling Death – CARF F4U-1C

Well I had to have it. My very own Ensign Eliminator. A little story first…last summer in my travels I latched on to a Moki Radial at a price I could not pass up because I’d have never bought one otherwise. We’ll now I have this motor, what do I do with it? About that time I seen the thread with the Comp-Arf Corsair at Nall and decided that was going to be the ticket plus I’ve always been a fan of the F4U. So I ordered it up and after many months of waiting it showed up it showed up last month. This is going to be a nice break from all the 3d and hucking once and a while.

This thing is pretty darn sweet. The completed one is from the Comp-Arf website. Here are a few pictures of the wing set and stabs and control surfaces. I tried to take some close ups of the detail but not sure it will show up good because of the silver. The fuse is still in the box but I have inspected it and it looks like everything else…great! Now I just ordered the standard version (non folding wings) for a couple of reasons. One, the price! Two, want to keep it fairly light and add other scale details such as external fuel tanks, rocket pods, functioning doors for cooling, tail hook and so on without ending up with a flying tank. Folding wings would be killer but I need to squeak it into a pretty tight landing area.

Also the retract set from Sierra is here and if you have not seen these assemblies yet your missing out. I also could not help showing off that motor tucked into the cowl. I am still waiting for the tail wheel, valves, and hoses yet. I have placed an order from DreamWorks R/C (thanks John) for door hinges, screws and adhesives.

Right now I think I am going to do the heavily weathered, single tone 1C navy version hence the thread title, but that may change when I get deeper into it. So I am just going to plug along with this and see if I can get it completed by summer.

You have my dream plane, please take care of it!! hahha Like alot of others, I spent a lot of time watching and rewatching Baa Baa Black Sheep. One of these days, if I hit the lottery, I'll have one!

P.S. Ken, please have the Sukhoi made into a 40%er... I'll buy one.

Well I got a start on installing retracts along with a few porters. CARF supplies a CF set of doors that need to be cut out. The outer portion of the CF is made to fit over the front gear cover and screwed into place. The thing I don’t like is the fact that it leaves a lip around the front door cover (see attached picture).

So I carefully cut out the area needed to install retracts in the wing the piece I cut out can be re-installed after the retracts are in place. The makes for very clean installation and matches with the rest of the panel lines. There was some trimming that needed to be done on the retracts themselves as well as the airframe. Once in place they work perfectly. There will need to be one hole in the bottom of the wing for a single bolt for the front inside mount for the retracts in the oil cooler area.

Hi Harv,

Yeah, that's pretty much what I am thinking. I put the thottle on a switch, full throttle and idle only. Isn't that how it's done for warbirds? I am also going to glue the rudder on solid, saves me from buying another servo.

If you're gonna do that, just get some music wire for the gear (forget the retracts, too much $$) and slap a G-62 on her! That oughtta do it, don't ya think?
