Pilot Size - Disappointing

I recently purchased a 35 % pilot for my 35% Extra 260. You would think AeroWorks would be on the ball and sell a customer the right size pilot for their airplane. I phoned them and asked specifically for the right size pilot to fit their 35% Extra. When I got it and put it in the cockpit the thing looks like a dwarf. Not even close. Now the thing is going to have to go back and I have to imagine that I need to order a 40% pilot (at least) to get a pilot large enough to reasonably fill the cockpit. Very disappointing that a company like Aeroworks cannot sell a pilot that is the right size for their airplane !

That is pretty standard of all R/C pilot figures. Typically you have to move upto the 40% size to actually fill up the 35%. There are some exceptions out there though.

I guess I am learning that one the hard way. I did search trying to see if anyone had similar experiences. I did find the odd post that made reference to AeroWorks sizing for pilots being off as compared with the scale of their airplanes.

One would have to think I am not the first person to have gone through this with AeroWorks. I just think that they should do a better job of matching the pilots they sell to their airplanes. This is a situation where size does matter !

Frustrating part is that will take me at least a week to send back because of the usual cross border hassle then I will wait two weeks to see a replacement pilot make its way back up here. Thankfully there is still snow on the ground and flying season is two months away still.

I have found that it is always best to get the sizes of the figures first and then order. I have had the same problem many times.

I held up the pilot that came with my 110" EF Yak to the one for my 40% Carden and they are the same size.....

My dad usta always tell me..."Measure twice, cut once!" but I guess in this case it would be "Measure twice, order once!"

The Pilot X that comes with the EF 110" Yak is large. The plane is very scale and has a large canopy and the Pilot fits it perfectly.

In fairness I should report that I called AeroWorks today and got excellent help from Mark. Wish I had talked to him the first time and I would not have gone through all this twice. He was extremely helpful and a replacement pilot is on its way to me. Thanks Mark !

To date I have built only one plane without a pilot. My current flier a Dawghouse Yak. It was a budget build and I got by as cheaply as I could.

A human head is (on average) is nine inches tall from bottom of chin to top of head. Very easy for me to scale a pilot head/bust knowing this information.

Thing is our planes are not scale replicas of real planes for the most part and the canopy (a pet peeve of mine) is an area that gets too little consideration from manufacturers. That and the cowls. Third is landing gear appearance/location.

I've noted with planes now-a-days it really does take the next size up to look about right. If not two steps.

Too big is ten times better than too small. It used to make me crazy to see an entire bust of a pilot perched in the head bubble of a Laser. I'm old now and layed back. Doesn't bug me much anymore unless it is a Laser !

Thanks for replying that they helped you out with it. People tend to go on these forums right away and try to bad mouth a reputable company just because they did not return the call within 5 minutes. Glad you got it squared away though.

Our advice has always been go larger. Even if scales were all true- the larger pilot figure (by customer consensus) always looks better.

I had a really good day flying a couple of weekends ago. I came home with such a case of the big head that I think mine was pushing 10 pounds! LOL!
