Hey guys,
Now that the 3DHS 89" AJ Slick are available to the masses, I figure a build and fly thread is in order .Here's what's written on the 3DHS website: Andrew Jesky, 2008 ETOC and XFC champion, and member of the United States F3a pattern world team, has designed a spectacular 89" ARF aircraft for 3DHobbyShop. The 89" Slick 540 is modeled after the full-size Slick 540 aircraft which is the latest, highest-tech full-size aerobatic aircraft. The AJ Slick delivers the goods: Total stability which will remind you of a 40% aircraft. Effortless no-rock harriers and easy, stable hovers/torque-rolls. Powerful, precise snaps even at lower airspeeds. Lots of lift in knife-edge flight thanks to the big, light fuselage and powerful rudder. Put the Slick next to some other popular 86-89" 50CC aircraft and it makes them look small. The huge fuselage of the Slick delivers spectacular knife-edge flight as well as slow downlines for constant-speed performance. All of this is possible on a stock DA-50 or DL-50 engine. Please watch the videos below, flown on a stock DA-50R on MTW TD-75K canister, to get an idea of the vertical performance of this package. Contact 3DHobbyShop to discuss your requirements or for information on engine selection if you fly at high altitudes. We have collected data on the Slick at 5,000 ft. as well as at sea level. One of the big questions people ask about the Slick is how BIG is it?
Well, here are some examples: Below, is the Slick rudder compared to an SD Model 35% Extra 260 (Yep, that's not a typo.. 35%) ![]() Here's how she stacks against my beloved Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Last edited by BoneDoc; 03-01-2009 at 10:10 AM. |

The Slick comes well packaged, protected by plywood bars between the boxes. The foam padding ensures that UPSman for the most part won't win
. But if he got something, just let Ben know and he'll take care of you. Included also are wing bags, stab bags.... along with carbon everything ![]()

Here's a pic of the cavernous fuselage
Also note the FG servo wire tube, and the antennae tube just below it. Last edited by BoneDoc; 03-01-2009 at 10:19 AM. |

Thanks,
I reupload the pictures. Now onto the build... errr.... ASSEMBLE pictures . The Slick comes with the ailerons and elevators already pre-hinged. So all I had to do was to hinge the rudder, install the control horns, engine / motor, servos, and that's pretty much it .My glue of choice is the gorilla / polyurethane glue. I simply dip the hinge in lubricant, dab it off, and glue away. |

Note the amount of elevator throws you can get
. Installing control horns about as easy as removing the covering, gluing it in place, then sandwich the phenolic strip on place. When installing the rudder horn, I try to eyeball it to make sure that the control horn lines up with the hinge line. For my purpose, I also cut down the control horn to get max throw. Andrew likes to use keep it long, and use 2" arms to get the full throw. |

I use my old worn out 25W solder to cut the covering away. It makes for cleaner cut that self-sealed. Servo install is also a breeze since a string is included to help guide the servo wires on the ailerons.
Note also that the servo is installed on the elevator itself, which makes for a truly removable setup. |

Wheel, LG, as well as Wheel pants install is also a breeze. Note that the pants is notched, so no guessing is required, and (in my case) a retention screw is not necessary (though recommended).
Note how tall the landing gear is. That's my 7 year old princess, helping her daddy assemble the plane together. landing gear install also involves only putting the 4 screws together, and that's it. With the cowling off, it takes a whole 5 min .

Electric flyers (like myself
) REJOICE! The fuel tank tray, the way it's designed, double as a battery tray as well. This "tray" extends all the way to the front of the box giving you all that battery space .Just about the only mod I did for electric is to simply add balsa lining on the sides, so that there's more laminar flow of air over the batteries. |

For gas flyers, here's how Andrew set up his 89" Slick.
All cannister mount, covering, and everything else short of the cans, (header, and teflon couplers) is already included to make your assemble a breeze. |

Andrew just acquired the ES composite pipe, and here's how he set his up. This dropped the AUW in his Slick down to 18.2. With around 1500 squares of wing, and tons of side area, this translates to uber-floaty performance
.The mod to make it accept pipes seems easy enough, just take down the back wall of the cannister tunnel, fabricate a ply piece to hod the back of the pipe and attach it to the Dave Brown pipe holder, and create an opening in the back. I'll let the man himself answers questions regarding this setup, and what performance difference he notices .

On my end, the Electric setup is easy enough as well.
I initially went with Reaper Brushless' GR70cc. The bolt pattern is the same as a DA50, so I just use the DA50 drill template, drill away, and install the motor. I added an air scoop at the bottom to help with cooling the batteries, since the GR70cc is a real powerhouse. |
