Same bloke who ran his engine for 5 gallons of fuel with factory needle settings, then wondered why it was not running right...

This may sound weird but sometimes when it gets cold it helps to leave the choke on about half after it pops just so it keeps running till it warms up kind of like a ATV.

Not weird at all. All my chokes on my snow throwers, lawn mower, weedwacker work that way. If really helps to leave your choke partially closed while it warms up if your low needle is tuned properly. Because a properly leaned low needle will make it hard to start in the cold. I used to always use my choke that way with my ZDZ 50NG's. They just wouldn't stay running unless I partially closed the choke for a few seconds. They need lots of fuel to start and stay running. Was like clock work.

Hi Guys

First of all, may you ALL have a Wonderful Blessed Christmas and Happy Flying New 2010!!!!

You know, it is VERY interesting these forums!! The difference in opinions, ideas, experience, etc. is absolutely interesting!

Yes, we all have our own ideas, methods, etc.......BUT you must decide what works for YOU!!! I can say that I have learned a lot from these Forums....but also heard a lot of hogwash! Yes, people who have their own AGENDAS, etc!

I have been in this hobby for 35 years (yes, I know DA's and DLE's have not been around THAT long), but I am am sure we all learn SOMETHING in that period of time!).

The answer/s to MOST of these questions/problems/issues, are that; LISTEN to what others say/have experienced, then experiment for yourself!! We are all NOT in the same situation/area/altitude/humidity, etc as others...so, try things out...unless you are still on the ground, what can go wrong?...see for yourself, experiment...THAT'S how we learn!!!! I am an electronics technician...how do you think Ohm, Kirchoff, Lenz, Flemming, etc. discovered "things"??. Yes, by observing, experimenting. etc!

So, as the old NIKE slogan goes: Just do it!!!

You will learn MORE!!

Happy flying everyone!

Hope Santa brings you a DLE30cc, 55cc or 111cc for Christmas!!!

Cheers

Ed

Could I hear from some of you guys who have actually bought and flown either the DLE-55 or the 111? There're at a good price, but is it too good to be true? What's the consensus out there? I have a 100 cc. plane looking for an engine, and, for me, the choices are DA-100 or DLE-111. By the time you buy the muffler, and other parts for a DA it's pretty darn pricey. Given my choices, which one would you guys go for? Thanks. Have a great New Year!

Hi guys first post here on the DL,DLE thread. Got a DLE 55 in a PAU Sukhoi and got it out to the field yesterday for the first flight. It would not start. Would only get a pop or two and that was it. Finally got another spark plug and got it to run, I know I should of changed out the stock plug for a cm-6 . After 2 flights performance is good but when cold it will start 2nd or 3rd flip but will quit after 15 to 20 seconds of running. After 4 or 5 attempts it stays running. Went thru the carb at the field when trouble shooting and it was clean as could be. When first priming the engine for the first time you could see the fuel being drawn down the line. Any Ideas.

What method of starting are you using? Mine is like clock work every time. Best starting engine I've ever had (my DL-50 and DLE-55 are both great).
Cold start/first start of the day:
-Choke closed, ignition on, thottle just a few clicks above idle. Flip until it pops then dies.
-Choke open, everything else same as above. Flip 3-4 times and it starts every time.
Warm/hot starts:
-Just flip and it starts first flip almost every time.

Make sure your needles are not out of wack especially the low. Both of mine like about 1 1/8 low, 1 5/8 high. These engines need tuning even though people like to think they can just fly them out of the box. Check the needles.

No problems either starting or running mine. Lots of power and smooth transitions with no burbale. This is after tuning the carb of course.

New engine sometimes need the carb to be primed before the first run but that happens with a lot of engines. The longer they sit on a shelf after manufacture the greater the probability of that happening.

I have been flying the DLE111 for about one mo. in a Pilot Yak 54. I have about 40, 15 min flights on the engine.

Starts easy, runs great, not touchy on the needles, very powerful. The only downside is that it is a little heavier than the DA100. Only time will tell if it is as durable as a DA.

just use a #11 exacto blad to gap your plug make shure you use a ngk cm-6.

see if your tank vent line is clear and the copper tube going through the tank stopper is not kinked or any thing like that and if you loop your vent line around the tank like your supposed to that its not kinked or anythig either.

I find 1.5 on the high is not enough even at my altitude. It will start and run but will quit if you try to go to full throttle. 1.75 on the high is a better starting point and then tune from there.
