You have me conviced Pat. My BMW and other vehicles come from the factory filled with synthetic and break in just fine with no ill effects. I am sure my little two stokes can do the same.

Just increase the oil content to the same 32-1 for the break in. There is a multitude of engines done exactly the same way and the failure rate due to excessive wear or damage is zero. After 3 to 5 hours you can alter the ratio. Not gallons,--hours. If you heat cycle the engine, as you should with any engine using any oil, the rings seat just fine.
So tune it after installing it in the plane and go fly. Don't waste the time or the fuel with ground running. Pi$$es off the neighbors. |

I do kind of what TOM does but at 40:1 with my husqavarna but I do check the spark plug after about the first 10 flights even after tuning to find out if its running a tad lean or just fine. If its good enough for world class chainsaws its good enough for me.

The only reason for a 32-1 mix is to assure wear particulate wash out. It also somewhat protects the manufacturers against lean running engine owners.... Someone that pays attention to their engine can run one ratio from day one.

so... I can stop the local search for a non synthetic oil to us for break in? Gonna take your word on this T O M as it makes sense to me. I run motul 800 full syn in everything else from chainsaws and weed eaters right to my dirtbike and every time I have had that engine apart it looks really good. and before you ask I rebuild the top end every year on the bike just to be sure it doesn't leave me standed in the woods some year...

TOM how important is it to have the hole cut in the firewall for the carb. Mine sets 3/4" from the firewall could that be the cause of the constant burble.

Nick,
3/4" to 1" is generally considered the minimum carb clearance. You could be having some impact from the firewall. But you are flying a Yak (last time I looked and a good many of them have had diaphragm pressure imbalance issues. Perhaps just a diaphragm tube from the cover plate to the carb opening. We should get together after the new year. We are only just across the river from each other.Jarhead, That Motul 800 is good stuff. Ran it myself for a long time. Only reason I changed was because the local shops didn't carry it. You brought up a good point. The synthetic racing oils were designed for maximum performance in the racing world. In those circles it's anticipated that owners have some involvement with their engines, so some of the oils do not have as much detergent additives as others. The oil manufacturers know that the racers will be inside their engines on a frequent basis, often once per race, cleaning everything they see. |

Hey Pat
We should I haven't seen ya since St. Helens many moons ago. Give me a heads up and I will meet you out at FPM or Mollala. I will be out at Mollala on New Years day for the annual breakfast. Here are some pics of the modified engine box and the engine. ![]() ![]() I already tried the diaphram mod have it routed to a film case with the hose going into the lid in the center. Then I have 1/8" holes around the edge of the lid to provide air into the case. I did this in case the Diaphram lets go. didn't want fuel inside the fuse LOL. Anyway would like to meet up with you and trouble shoot the cause of the problem. Low hovers already raise the "pucker factor" but doing so with a engine that sounds as mine does at low to mid range puts cramps in the back side if you know what I mean LOL.

I can truly understand that. If the wx stays as it's been we'll have to do a house meet. I still believe the tube routed to the carb intake is better methodology for that type of fix.
Worst case we'll take a peek at the reeds. |

Jeff,
I agree w/ T.O.M., the three Yaks I've owned always have had pessure imbalance problems. That was with a DA-50, DL-50 and an Evolution 58. The Evo had the least problem with it and naturally had the most power. My Extras don't seem to have that problem. Where else are ya flying besides Molalla? We need to connect up and throw the sticks around sometime. Ron |

Wow!! Now I know why Tower started selling the DLE engines. It looks like they just picked up the whole Aero Works line!
