Well lets see The field was further then he wanted to go. He took a wrong turn to get gas which left him much much further then he wanted to go. He had me bugging him about my carb on my DLE-55 most of the day. Well the rest is much better but I will let him tell ya. LOL Sorry Pat couldn't resist.

Oh no, not me buddy. I'll leave it for others that were there. I couldn't believe how far people have to go to find a gas station out there... BTW, that "missing" thumbscrew fell out of the plane when I took it out of the truck. Told ya it had been in there.
I DO need to find a way to get my Compy Yak up here though. She's been waiting a few years for me to put her up. Another option would be to bring up the Giles, which is a great flyer, or bring up the big Ulty and find a place to put it together. I DID have fun in spite of it all Jeff. The excitement in the corner was pretty good too Just part of a day's flying. Chit happens, right? Do pass on my thanks to the Barnstormer's club for letting us come out and fly as guests. That was mighty hospitable of them.

I get down there from time to time myself. They are a great group. Very laid back as far as I can tell. I can't wait to hear the stories. Vince still has to tell me his story too.

Will do. My hanger is open to ya Pat anytime ya want to work on it let me know. Pulled my cowl today and found a boat load of potential problems with the 55. Called Jody and I think we have it figured out. Going to recieve a new carb and reed assembly.
Problems I found low needle was in so far it only had 3/4 to stop. The butterfly shaft was .060 to .080 of slop in it because I had the high end point to high. Pulled the reed assembly and found that the alum had a nice size pit in it on the far left corner of the left reed. The pit extended half way across the alum toward the end facing the engine. After that had a hair line scratch continuing the rest of the way to the end. Also reeds had small hairs and micro debrie lodged under them were they were mounted to the reed cage. Then one of the reeds had a stress fracter aft of the screw towards the working end of the reed. Anyway Jody seemed to think that maybe the diaphrame arm was out of adjustment and said something about the pop off pressure. At that point I went What???? and we decided to get new parts and start over. Once I get the parts I will send the old ones back and have him take a looksie. That way I will have back ups in the trailer for comps this season. Oh we also talked about props and found that the Vess 23A or a 22-8 would be a better fit for my application so will give that a try also once I get the new parts in. I like how the engine pulls with the 23A so will prob stick with them. I have a 22 break in prop in the trailer so will oput that on and see how it goes. Any rate I am determined to get the engine running good with a good presentation for shows. If anything I am learning a boat load of information for future builds and to help others at the field.

Oooooh, you have more of the story when you're letting on
Short story is the wing tube shattered inside the fuselage tube. The wing retention bolt did not have a chance of holding it from that point on. Cause of the tube failure? Who knows, but it was flown pretty hard for a year. I didn't hold back much and she did well in spite of that. Jeff, You won't believe this. That 4-1/2" fiberglass spinner and ultra light backplate survived! |

The 3/4 low needle wasn't a big deal but it was acting like it was something at the reed side. Pop off pressure is a funny thing. You can really dial an engine in for specific types of performance with that.
Run over to a local Napa and pick up a tube of Permatex Anaerobic Sealer. Not cheap, but real good stuff. Don't get the primer. The surfaces you'll use the sealer on are not bad enough, or wide enough, to require it. |
