I ran a 23x8 and was only able to get 6500 RPMs. I switched to a K&S front dump cansiter and used a new CM-6 spark plug. What are the nominal setting for the high and low needle and what gap is recommended for the CM-6 spark plug?

dave, put 1 1/2 on both...thats your starting point, start to close the needle to get peak rpms on high and low needle. If the engine stumbles, sputters, and puffs some smoke out when you advance the throttle that means the low is a little rich, lean it 1/8 turn and try again. If it sounds like you turned off the ignition or dies, that is to lean, richen it 1/8 turn and try again.

Last night I checked the needles and the high end was 1.75 and th low end was 1.25. I will reset them and try again. The CM-6 spark plug comes with a gap of .18. Is this to narrow? What should the gap be?

David that is very close to where mine are, 1 1/8 low and 1 3/4 high. On mine anything less than 1.75 on the high is too lean and will lose rpm. I am at 1500' ASL. A gap of 18 to 20 thou is good.

Your needles, like Doug said, are going to be very close to ideal where you have them. I gap my plugs with a #11 Exacto blade or .022". You said it ran like crap but didn't give any description of what crap is. Is it that you are just not happy with the WOT RPM you are getting or are there other run-ability issues. In my experience, depending on exhaust and prop brand choice, 6500 is not a bad number out of the DLE55 with a 23" prop but 23" props are not my first choice for it.

My 50 and 55 like about 1 5/8 high and 1 1/4 low. 1 3/4 was too rich on the high, would miss at WOT. With a 23" prop you might need it richer than me. I agree I don't hear too many of these engines turning standard blade 23" props anywhere near 7000 unless they are piped. That's a lot of prop. I prefer 22x8 myself. Instant power and lots of it.

By standard blades I assume you don't mean Vess right ??? Mine (DLE 55) was turning a 23A at 7440 straight out of the box...

Yep. That is exactly why I stated it that way. The Vess are a differrent story.

The 23A is an easier prop to spin than the likes of a Xoar....

I've not found a Vess prop I've liked yet. Perhaps there's one out there. The previous Xoar props made from a single wood laminate were not all the great for my planes. When Xoar started making the laminated props their performance got a lot better. I tried the BME and later PAU laminated 3d props and liked them very much. I believe they are the same as the Xoar laminateds.

That is what I have been using. The laminated Xoar props and a couple of Mejzlik CF ones.

Ok don't flame me here but we tried 3 different props on my brother's Cap and to me the Vess 23A was pretty good especially in slow flight, and in hovers I felt I had more aileron control. The 22/8 MenzS was alot noisier at speed, well we could rip the MenzS but we could really only hear the Vess at low speed and it was only the tips. They had a whisper to them it seemed like. My brother absolutely hated the Vess because he didn't like the way it slowed on landing or with the throttle at idle. Said "it felt like the plane instantly stopped, like it put on the brakes !!!" He prefers the NX 22-8 props from Air Wild...

From reading here I thought the Vess was going to be considerably louder as in ripping at WOT but that was not the case. The MenzS was the loudest or shall I say easiest to rip at WOT followed by the NX and then the Vess but at slow speed and idle the Vess talks to you but it is a whisper from the tips. This was our findings and our own opinions so please take this with a grain of salt...all the props were run on a broken in DL50 mounted on a 1st gen H9 Alitalia Cap 232...

I can't use Vess props at my field. A buddy has a Brison 50 with a Vess 22A or B and man is it loud (the prop). I have the DL-50 and DLE-55 with stock exhaust so I need a more quiet prop. The Xoar 22x8 beech is pretty quiet. I bet the 22x8 laminated would be even quieter. I gotta order one of those from Jody before flying starts. I also have a MSC 22x8. Man does that thing have huge paddles. I gotta see how that 3D's. It's been sitting for a couple years brand new waiting for some air.

The Vess 23B is a very quiet prop on a DL 50. Pulled vertical great too but I preferred the 23A.

For my flying either would be fine. But so is the Vess 22B ! So was the APC 22X10. Etc. etc.
