I noticed on one of my DL100's that the corner tip of one of the reeds is missing (it still covers the opening). The other thing with the same reeds on that one side is that they do not sit flat against the housing (cage) allowing for one side of the reed to not get a seal while at rest.
What issues may this cause if any?

Hey good hearing from you to. I pulled the carb off and opened it up and did find some goo and paritcals. I blew out all of the passage ways and reassembled it. The spring and diafram are in good shape and the fiberious plat on the other side did have some yellowish gooie fluids behind it. I will try to restart it this evening to see if that fixed the problem.

i would just get a new set of reeds. if the tip is chipping i think it will continue. they are cheap. maybe jodi or TOM will have some info on boyesen reeds. they are great on motorcycles and jetski's but not sure about the small displacement engines we run.

You can order reed stock from Boyesen but cutting them using scissors or a sharp blade induces fraying. Done right requires a stamp cut or water jet. I've even gotten Boyesen reeds that had a little warp between petals so they aren't always perfect. They work great in our engines but really are not worth the additional hassle for how we run our stuff.
Better just to order up another set of reeds from your DLE dealer. They are not expensive. Reeds wear, and at various rates it seems. All the engine manufactures have reeds go south on them so it's not an issue particular to DLE. If it happens a second time consider obtaining two sets of reeds the next time. Cut one set to one third the length of a stock set then install both the stock length and the cut length at the same time with the short ones on top. Better, just cut the old and worn reeds into the 1/3 length set.... |

Thanks guys, but way ahead of you both. I had bought a spare set last year, chenged them out already.
I will save the other set, may come in handy to do what you (TOM) suggested. I will get another set for a spare, will also look into some reed material to try as well (maybe next winters project, LOL).

So would the reeds not sitting flat on the surface cause any issues?

If it's bad enough it can cause it to have dificulty pumping fuel while hand cranking and possibly some idle issues, if it's just a small lift they get forced shut when the piston heads down the cylinder. You will notice other problems before they are bad enough to cause problems at high RPM.

It was a very small amount, but I thought I would ask just to learn. Motors running well, like the smoothness of tuning with the Walbro over the EMAS. Could still tune with the EMAS, but the needles are touchier than the Walbro.
Jody, did you get any carb kits for the EMAS yet? Keeping mine as spares.

I have seen very few EMAS carbs, but the Tillototson and Walbro kits were an exact fit...

Well tried it out again today. Not sure if it is due to the warmer weather (8 degree C as compared to 4.8 degree C) or the reeds, but I am getting about 200 rpm more on all props I tried. One thing with the new reeds is that it looks as if the reeds are made out of the same material as compared to the photo in the previous post, they are all the white ones now (same as the bottom ones in the photo).
