Default Smart Fly Power Expander Install Ques.

This is the first time using any kind of power expander in my set up.

Here's my question:

The instructions say to mount your RX to the power unit with velcro like tape. Then you "hard mount" the entire power box/receiver to the fuse with four servo-like grommets/bushings. Does this set up afford enough vibration isolation for the power box but also (more importantly) the receiver?

The receiver is a JR 921 2.4 ghz...........

Thanks,

Jim

I "hard mounted" a 921 2.4 like it says and have had no troubles whatsoever. I used 1/4 to 3/8 balsa wood to provide rails, then used servo grommets and brass bushings.

Hi Jim,

We have soft mounted all of our Smart-Fly Power Expanders on Tygon hose with a nylon bolt through the PE's grommet (no brass insert) and another nylon bolt through the mounting surface. We also secure it with a cable tie around the tygon whare the bolts thread in the tygon just in case it gets a little hot in the Fuselage and softens the tygon allowing the bolts to come loose.

This set up softens alot of the direct vibrations from the mounting surface that are transferred to the PE.

Hope this helps,

Fletch

Jim,
I too questioned the "hard" velcro attachment. I've used Smart Fly equipment in my last 5 or 6 40%'ers and like their stuff. However, I put a piece of 1/2" foam cut the exact size of my Rx for the Rx to sit on and then I wrap the whole thing with a piece of velcro strap. Guess I'm "old school" where we tried to isolate the Rx from any kind of vibration.

I velcro'ed the rx to the expander with softer velco and used 1/2 foam between the exp/rx to frame.
I think SF wants to reduce the vibration on the white servo wires.

Hard mounted using the rubber groms, Rx is held on with "soft" velcro.. Works great. Pretty much went with the suggested Smart Fly mounting set up.

I use this double sided tape gel from Quick of Japan. Works really great. Its about 3/16" thick and really sticks on real well. Been using it on helis for some time now. You can peel it off whenever you need to and revive it with water and a tiny amount of dish soap and it gets real tacky again. Only problem is, its quite expensive. For $16.00 at my LHS, you get a strip about 2 inches wide by 5 inches long.

I'm sorry, I just double checked and I was wrong. The brand is Zeal which is owned by KYOSHO. Part #Z8006. My LHS ripped me off. Amainhobbies.com sells them for $12.75!!! I've got my last bag in front of me and the geltape is about 1 3/4" wide by 6" long. http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ducts_id/19713
