I use 95 'cause I figure it usually sits around for a few weeks between flights and this leaves a bit of room if it drops its octane anyway.

I tend to use the same petrol station or at least brand to keep the brew more consistant, and have a mark on the fuel can that I fill to for consistant volume. (No, I don't bother about the outside air temperature, barometric pressure or carry a burette with me...)
That's what ivé always been taught in my aviation field. Howie/ Richo could confirm but 91-95 is all that's needed for Da . 3w and zdz have higher comp ratio therefore require higher oct, ie 98.

Doc,

I am with you here, Higher Octane will not have any major impact on performance for an engine which does not have a high enough compression ratio to necessitate the higher octane.

Octane is a rating system which represents a fuels resistance to knocking (pre -detonation), this detonation can result from a number of things, however in essence it is heat related. IE; high compression pressures and as a consequence high temperatures, high cylinder temps caused by lack of cooling, high ambient temps, incorrect ignition timing and a myriad of other things.

If an engine has low compression ratio's 8.5 :: 1 it really would not benefit from having a higher Octane fuel, as it should not be prone to detonation on our standard unleaded fuels. Unless of course it is detonating due to a problem.

Cheers,

Jeff

Good onya Garry. great to see you placing in the new class already. I will have to work a little at chasing you down now.
Give me a ring when your back up here next. I have something to show you. ( I am closer to basic than ever now. )
Managed about two and a half hours in the air today, and so did my mate who maidened his new Gas Aghusky. what an awesome weekend. nearly five hours in the air. Gotta love Gas airplanes..... I couldn't have afforded the fuel if I was flying glow still.

You are right that the DA100 does not need 98 octane fuel, however running such fuel will not make it more prone to pre-detonation.

I do Mick, I think it is well wasted on me though.

Someone out there with talent will get much better use from it.
