I've noticed some pretty broad needle ranges with mine too. I have about 1/2 of a gallon in it. I have been running it at 4 to 4 1/4 turns out, and it is rich. I figure I'll run it like that for awhile and let it break in without too much stress. I have it on a 5lb 5 oz plane, and vertical is unlimited, but not the crazy power I expected from it. Maybe after some running I will get more of what I'm looking for. It will hover at 2/3-3/4 throttle up high (yep new plane). It has awesome torque, and a nice consistent idle. I expect power to get better with time. I'm only using 15% fuel. 30% costs too much because I burn at least a quarter of a gallon each day at the flying field. I'm not going to pay that much for 30%.

I've heard the low speed has a lot to do with the fuel consumption and possibly smoothness.

I always started at 2.5 to 3 on my 72's, don't know if it's different for the 82. I'd fire it up at 3 and always went in from there, normally ended up between 2 and 2.5 turns for 300 to 400 rpm's below peak. This worked for me on 2 72's, never owned the 82.

The first thing you need to do is get some 20 20 fuel. The settings i use on my saito 82 is 1/2 out on the low end and 1/2 to 3 1/2 out. And when you get runing open the throttle up all the way and lean it down until you get max posible RPM's And then richen it up and take it down about 300 RPM.

You can start at 4 or 5 out, it will just be running sloppy rich. 1/4 turn adjustments sound like your tuning a gasser. Just keep going in until you reach the peak and then back off a few hundred RPM. If it turns out you are like 1/2 turn from fully closed then you probably have a problem but otherwise you should be fine. Seems like mine ran at somewhere inside of 2 turns out but it can certainly vary. Low end is usually a little rich at the factory starting point. Again it should still run but be rough on idle and rich on transition. Lean the low end in very small increments until you get a smooth idle and a good transition.

I also ran my 82 in a profile and the vibration can give some tuning issues. My 82 would run much smoother on the bench and develop more RPM. Unfortunately the bench didn't fly worth a crap.
