Well the plane flies! I finally finished it and got it flying but it was 30km/h winds so bit of bad weather to maiden but got it flying anyways. The dle 55 has a lot of power compared to a da 50 already, it was spinning a xoar 22x10 at 6400rpm with a bison pits muffler on the first tank and haven't checked it since. Only got 2 flights on the plane so still getting the wrinkles out. My setup is:
5x 7955TG 1x 925MG 3x Fromeco 2600mah lipos DLE 55 Bision pits muffler with the tips cut off xoar 22x10 smart fly sport plus smart fly opti ignition kill mpi arms Dave brown spinner (for nose weight) I would guess that the plane weighs 15-16.5lbs and its very easy to get bevel to bevel throw with 1.5" arms and would also be possible with 1.25" The plane flew well but it was so windy the wind was basically flying the plane so I'll get some more news on it once Ive had a few more flights. This is a add on from another forum post just about the engine. "Some great info in this thread thanks guys, I have a DLE 55 new in a aeroworks extra 300 50cc and have been very impressed so far! 1st tank of gas it was turning 6400rpm on a xoar 22x10 and has since improved to about 6600rpm on the 5th flight and haven't tacked it since (it has about 10 flights right now) The engine is running like a swiss watch and has excellent throttle response, and has never skipped a beat and there was even no burbles after I had tuned the engine so i checked the spark plug and found it was brown and going to what looked like it was leaning towards the leaner side so I richened it up a 1/8" on the HS. I want to try a vess prop to see what it does but don't want it screaming so I was thinking a 23a or 23b. The engine has a bison pitts muffler with the tips cut off and is running husqavarna oil (awesome oil btw) " Since then I have gotten more flights I fine the plane really locks in to hovers better than any of my others, and does smooth rolling harriers! Knife edges are nice and smooth but i need right aileron so I think my left wing is a bit heavy. Great flying plane though! |

Good report.
The KE / aileron is due to the rudder and not a heavy wing. I mixed 2 % out and it was great. Very rare have I see a plane that didn't need a rudder to el mix and a rudder to aileron. If you want to check for a heavy wing pull straight up in front on you with the canopy facing you.. draw a long line and push over the top at idle. Then draw a 2-3 second line and pull up somewhat agressively on low rate evelvator. Whatever wing drops is heavy. This is providing your elevators are moving exactly the same. The other thing you can do is pull a loop with your wings perfectly level at the start. You will see a wing drop and the loop will wander one way. Whichever wing dropped is heavy. Add .5 oz to the tip and try again. This will help your overal tracking, especially inverted.

Well got some more flights on the Extra tonight and something I though felt weird! So finally I figured it out the plane has a bunch of down thrust, so where i noticed this was the rolling harriers and harriers along with pretty much everything actually it would always pitch towards the gear! So inverted harriers were awesome but they sucked on upright so I'm going to put some washers on the standoffs I'll get back to you with the results later, also practicing the new 2010 imac sequences they look good!

NEED HELP! Have a problem but I can't figure it out. The extra is balanced at 4" from the leading edge, but pitches towards the gear in a long vertical up line, knife edge, or in straight and level flight, because if i give it up trim its too much up trim and pitches the plane up. So I'm thinking its down thrust that is the problem what do you guys think?

I posted a response elsewhere... but if you are going to fly IMAC with it you want this plane to be between 3.5-.375" 4" is too far back.
Also, it's going to pitch to the belly depending on your CG, when you move it forward it won't couple as bad. That being said you will still need to do a rudder to elevator / rudder to aileron mix to get it perfect. Also you will want some more up thrust if it still pulls towards the canopy on long uplines AFTER you get the CG right.

Thanks sinergy I saw your post on rcu first so I'll try moving the cg more forward, what was your cg at in the second video on youtube, because it looked like it locked into harriers better than mine. After correcting the cg I may have to add up thrust. Should have gone with a bigger engine or heavier batteries because my ignition battery is on the firewall and the others are only 8" away from the ignition. BTW lipos are the way to go in my opinion unless you need the weight with two 2600mah on the receiver I only use about 2600mah after a full day of flying so 12x10min flights they last forever and I'm also using 7955 all around. Whats your setup sinergy on your aeroworks Extra 300? To give a update if I crashed this plane lets say tomorrow, I probably wouldn't be too enticed to go get another not saying they are bad planes at all aeroworks is great I just would like to try others that might track better such as Extreme flight especially being in a very windy place. The plane also isn't that light on the wings for me so maybe my cg is totally messed up and the thrust is a$$ backwards but I'll let everyone know after I have fixed these issues. Or Wild Hare since they make some pretty nice and cheaper planes (you have to get your own hardware though) but pretty much all the bolts on the aeroworks were cross threaded in the beginning so I would rather pick my own, also along with the plane being $800 Canadian. This may sound like a lot of cons but man is this color scheme awesome! Check out what my friend did to his wild hare edge!

Fix your CG and you will be a lot happier.. I am a little shy of 3.75" I have more footage that will go with my review but with the CG up that far it really gets solid in harriers.
I am running a123s, I don't really think weight is that be of deal with this plane. I wasn't too impressed with the CG back so far and then once I brought it forward I really started to click with the plane. Even at 4" I felt it IMAC'd well but it started to groove better around 3.75" As far as other options, I have owned 5 Wildhare planes and flown the new version of the Extra and 87" Sukhoi, they are decent planes but I don't consider them in the same class as AW and EF. I owned 2 EF 300 88" and I love that plane. Pretty hard to beat honestly but it is also a lot bigger. The AW will out tumble it due to the shorter moment. The EF 88" is prob my fav 50cc plane out there.. but I do enjoy the AW 300 as well, iot flies both precision and 3D well.. I would like to get my hands on a Slick

Little review.
Pros: -Great looking airplane -Great consturction -Great quality -QB and it was quick! Cons: -Low wing area -hardware was a little questionable with all the cross threaded push rods and bolts I had -coupling in knife edge -short fuse length This is what I have found so far, and I'm still having cg issues, but I personally think its a thrust issue so I'm going to try various things because my cg is on 3.8" right now so I don't think going down to 3.75" will help. Stuff that I have left out of the Pros and cons sheet is the price because all arfs in this size are very close to the same price IN THE END. I also left out weight becasue it weighs just as much as most 50cc planes its not lite and its not heavy. Would I buy another if I crashed it lets say tomorrow, that would be hard to say since I haven't got all the bugs worked out yet but I wouldn't mind trying out extreme flight. I think what it comes down to is I was hoping for more out of this plane than what I've gotten far but time will tell! Later, Colin |

So update: fixed the cg to basically 3.8 and its a bit better in knife edges and uplines I can now get it trimmed to fly level flight. If your looking for a plane that harriers well LOOK ELSE WHERE not hitting aeroworks hard here but it does not have the wing area to harrier all that well but it does hover nicely once you get it up in the hover. I like the plane a lot more since I've fixed the cg and the DLE is really coming it to its own its making tons of power, and starts on the first or second flip after the first run. I'm using husqavana oil and so far after 1 gallon through the engine I'm very pleased. The 7955 are nice servos too!

man that sucks,, sorry to see that. I have a dx7 and anytime i seen this stuff makes me wonder.. there are plenty of variables that create such issues, but hate to see it happen to anyone.. just seen where you are located, is analogboy still flying at all, havent seen much activity from him on here in a long time..
