Because the more you practice, the more Wood you get, and I like getting Wood.

Everyone had great responses, getting beat by 9-12 year olds is definitely motivation to practice more. Camaraderie and traveling to the contests is half the fun. There are a great bunch of guys in IMAC and I'm glad I decided to compete, '09 is not shaping up too good for me tho.

There is no comparison in watching IMAC and competing in IMAC. When you are in the mix, your nerves are jangling, your stomach is heaving and your eyesight is blinded by your brains exploding...other than that, its the most fun you can have in RC
Seriously though, if you are considering it, practice the routine until you know it blindfolded, and establish a routine of sorts (fueling up right after a flight, checking your battery staus, looking for anything amiss with the plane) so that when it comes time for you to go, you are ready and eager and you won't have a breakdown 'cause your engine won't start.

I find that IMACers are the friendliest bunch of competitive guys out there...far less serious than pattern guys (I was one once, so don't go nuts) willing to help at every turn and more than willing to share their pearls of wisdom. As far as 3D versus IMAC...3D a lot and you will kill a lot of planes in one season. IMAC planes mostly just wear out from flying for hundreds of flights over sometimes 5 or more years.
Welcome

virginia is a tough place for imac, im finally going to fayettville after trying to get away for over a year to fly basic. ive also looked at the ne events in pa and id like to make one of those. i also enjoy 3d flying and im getting good at it, but flying straight lines in the wind is one of the hardest manuvers i can think of. farm club is working on a sister field in culpepper and farc is working on another runway so maybe va will get something next year.

the way I look at it is to be around a group of Great People ....This weekend my * yr old Son will be competing for the first time in IMAC , we have done three Youth Master's events , but He is looking forward to IMAC . Some of you may very well know that We are 3D people , but I look at IMAC being a way to allow you to see things a little different and better your all around flying ..

I fly IMAC so I dont destroy my 40% plane doing 3d tricks I love 3D but cant afford to accidently dumb thumb one in the deck now with school! Luckily I have a 33% yak to do that 3d stuff with soon!

I also believe IMAC helps your 3D skills. You are smoother with the sticks!

Plus IMAC is just fun!!! And IMAC has a great group of guys!!!

Everything everone else said......plus it keeps my interest in the hobby. I am one that got into and out of flying 3 times because I got bored with it. Flying IMAC allows me to practice, improve, and push myself keeping my interest. I have such a long way to go, there is no end in sight....I hope!!!

It is just too aweseome to see someone fly a perfect sequence (not me flying)

Plus it is just too much fun to watch the guys who take it way to serious when they throw hissy fits and blame judges for all their mistakes.

Everyone gave great reasons. I agree that watching can be boring, unlike watching full scale. I think the reason is pace of manuevers. I really would like to see tighter, higher energy routines encouraged through scoring changes, but that is another discussion.

Have you ever been in a Fun Fly? Think of IMAC like a fun fly where you know the majority of the contests for the year BEFORE YOU SHOW UP. The skill to place your plane where and when you want is like the "Dead stick spot landing" or the "Limbo" contests or even the "bomb drop" which is usually how I score. Hehe. The fun of competition, the people are great, the increase in skill for other types of flying, it's all good.

As far as Virginia not having event this year. You are actually in luck. You can go to two contests in the adjoining region and have the points count toward your region, if I remember right. The good news is there will be three or four contests in Maryland this year. Hurlock is coming up soon and Pegasus is in July. Both are easy drives.

Come on up!

I agree watching IMAC for most is pretty boring, but thats why we have the freestyle on Sat. or Sun eavning right?

It is a great hobby with great people and is very challenging to do well at. It will most certianly make you a better pilot and keep you practicing to be better.
