Hey Joe!
My recommend about using a A123 battries is to use the Fromeco Kodiak switch with the Amp counter. why? Because the A123 is alway (after10-15min) showing 6V when you check it, so you cant know when you need to recharge the battery. but whaen you use the Kodiak swutch you know how much mAp was wasted from your battery.

that just my recommend

No you can't, this has to do with board level things and crossing ground planes in a bad spot. It is a good idea in theory but don't do that.
