Yeah that sounds good, I'm anxious to see what you think and how it performs.

okay - test flights under the belt - no problems at all at the field and everything went smooth! I met Wayne Matthews at the field with his 3.0m CA Yak55...a good comparison of the two planes as we got some good shots of them togther. I must say - they are VERY close in size!

DA100 + 28-10 Mej + KS tuned pipes = COMPLETE SATISFACTION! I could not be happier with this combination...absolute quiteness...no need for prop ripping! (I didnt encounter this at all). Mind you, this is a new engine and performed flawlessly! I still cannot believe how smooth the idle and how much power was available - right out the box!

My first time running Futaba servos - I see no problems at all and loved the feel and precision that they showed. 9155 on the ailerons, 9156 on the stabs, 9157/8611 on the rudder. No need to change a thing here.

First flight - resulted in TRULY UNLIMITED VERTICAL! The plane required 14 clicks of UP elevator trim for horizontal flight (about 3/16" of inch). I know most Yaks require Up elevator trim, so this is no surprise. No aileron or Rudder trim was required. I do think I could add a bit more nose weight to the plane as it requires VERY little down elevator when inverted on horizontal lines. 45 uplines + half roll = hands off continous climb with very little fall to the canopy. I do have a 5" P51 Tru Turn spinner with a lightend back plate....putting on a heavy backplate may be just what I need...I could also move the engine forward as well with a shim...we'll see what happens.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th flights went flawlessly. I played with the all control surface throws....I will get the exact throws the next time I go out - but I will say that 27 deg of aileron throw is choice! May be too fast for some - but I like how the plane blazingly snaps around!

The plane will require a downline mix (throttle to elevator). The plane does tuck to the belly a bit with very little roll out. I started with the mixing...but nothing in stone as of yet (I will report back on that as well). The vertical uplines is RIDICULOUS!!

We also weighed the plane - it went back and forth from 28lbs 12oz to 29lbs 1oz.....this is with a 1/4 tank of gas in it.

I am sooooo very happy with this plane - Chris Henson ( Extreme Flight RC) has knocked it out the ball park with this design!!!! Thanks Chris!!!!

Looks good Joe.

I maidened one of these planes for a buddy of mine today. DA-100, MTW's etc etc..
The plane flew really well.
We had low ceilings so we couldnt do much vertical stuff with it but we had a blast 3D'ing it.

Heres a pic of his.

Hi Wayne! Im pretty sure you did have a good time....the plane is crazy stable in slow flight. I didnt too much, I was still amazed at how well this plane flies IMAC sequences....I cant wait to get it dialed in!

See you soon!!

I wish I could make it. We are putting on a 3D event here in Tyler, TX that same weekend. My parents live up in Cleveland. I try to come out and fly when I come home to see them. Maybe I will see you at the Joe Nall.

Hey Joe,

Wayne maidened my Yak 54 yesterday and there is nothing like having one of the guys involved in development of this fine machine doing the test flight duties for ya! The first time in a long time I was completely relaxed during a maiden flight!

Like you I am completely impressed with Chris Hinson's machine this Yak 54 is amazing. Very neutral, well behaved and flawless out of the box. We decided that mine needs to have the CG move forward just a little, so I'm planning on moving the bats which are aft of the rudder servos to a more forward position. But even at that she needed just a little elevator and aileron trim and was grooving right away. We had four great flights and Wayne managed some close in 3D stuff - the rolling harriers were fun new engine and all.

Wayne many thanks again for the recommendation, the help rigging, and the coolest test flight I can remember in a long time - ya make it look too easy!

I'm gonna love IMAC flying with this jewel of a machine!

xtra 330, glad the maden went well. one thing that you might try is add a little up thrust. I had some of the same symptoms with my yak and added just a little up thrust and was able to take out alot of up elevator and take out my down line mix. Just a thought.

Hi Josh - Thanks for the input - I didnt notice the plane coming off the uplines...but then again, it was a good clip of wind out there that required wind correction....the next time I go out I will pay closer attention to that....that is where I usually determine if I need up,down, right or left thrust added to the engine.

I am not set on the CG I want either....I think its just a tad tail heavy, removing the lightweight backplate spinner and adding the heavy one should give me what I am looking for. I am not worried in LEAST bit of adding weight to the plane - it is not hurting in that category!

I am hoping to make it back out this weekend sometime, but we'll see. I will report back here on everything that I find and settle in on.

I now have 2 gallons of gas through this plane. Unfortunatley, it has been windy everytime I go out, not ideal conditions to really dial in a plane. But....I am more into getting to know this plane and its charactersitics.

As mentioned above, I feel the plane to be slightly tail heavy....still, even after removing the lightend back plate with a heavy one...its only 2.5oz difference, so nothing really changed as far as CG is concerned. The way I setr my planes up fro IMAC is by doing a 45 degree upline, then do a 1/2 roll to inverted...ultimatley, you want to see the plane to fall gradually to the canopy....my plane is holding that 45 line without falling one bit. Another place you can see where the CG is more to the aft side of things is when you try to perform spins.

The next step is to move the engine forward another 1/4" fwd, from the factory setting of using a 1" standoff. I hope to have this done this evening and go out again some time this week to see how she performs. If it still needs the weight to be forward, I will then move the batteries even more forward than they are now, which is right on the F1 former.

Other than that - all I can say is the plane performs very well in the wind. The wind was gusting 15+ at the field, and the wind was very choppy. All that is needed is to fly the plane at a faster speed than you normally would. Im finding that the plane can perform very well at the 1/2 to 3/4 throttle settings throughout the entire Unlimited sequence. Its got the power like a 35lb 40% Carden on a 150 with Greves pipes!

More to come.

Just got back from another 5 flights (maybe six)....alot calmer wind this evening, so it was perfect to see what this plane is really needing...

First - I had moved the engine forward another 1/4" and moved one of the receiver batteries into the motorbox...approx 6" forwrad than where they were at.....results - I couldnt see any! The plane did not require any more 'up' elevator trim, but the plane did begin to fall slliigghhttllyy to the canopy on an inverted 45 deg line going up. The spins were starting to show favor....but I think it was more just dialing in what is needed....not quite there yet - but close as it is.

I did see where the plane was indeed going to the belly on vertical uplines...right around the 200-300ft mark....some people probabaly wouldnt worry about this - but I am going to add 1/16" shim, to see if it will carry another 100-200ft before coming off line.....to be honest, it is very minute and can compete where it sits...but why settle for something that can be fixed and remove the work load while flying? Like Josh had mentioned earlier - doing this should relieve some of the 'up' elevator trim needed for level horizontal flight...this should also help out with having the plane fall to the canopy on the 45deg invertered upline test.

The plane shows no sign that needs Right or Left thrust...

I am pretty much settled on the throws I currently have for IMAC work....the sequence and roller mode just about there, just some minor changes need to be made...but thats just personal preference...I will post the throws I have the next time Im working on the plane.

Still very, very happy with this plane!

Joe,
I am glad all is going well with the plane. I was wondering if you would be at the Nall if so what day?

I bought another Cam 300 and I will let Mark fly it till he gets his new one done.

The Ga contest is the week after the nall I will be there also.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Hi Mike - another one!? I hear ya buddy...Cam does make some very nice flying planes, John Schroder, as you know has one, and now you have two of them....(I still miss selling her to you). After you meeting with Frank, you should be on your way of having those planes dialed in! I am anxious to see what changes had been made (if any) since the last time I flew with you.

Mark isnt going to know what to do with one of those planes! Hes going to think he died and went to heaven!! lol But that is very nice of you to do that....true friendship there!

I will be going to the Joe Nall - more than likely head up there evening time on Thursday....or early morning Friday....I guess I better start looking for a hotel (yikes)...or I will be camping out in my car =)

See you soon -
