OK I'll be the one to ask.
What's the vanessa method of balancing? Did you try just picking it up by the wing tube? I'm betting it will be pretty nose heavy, that plane has not been known for being tail heavy. TF |

Sorry, my comments earlier were on the 35% Sukhoi but I guess would still apply. No matter -- you will love the Wild Hare Sukhoi. I have flown the smaller one and it handles just like the big one. Just a great airframe.

Are the batteries he is using OK? I am being told not to use the AA cells for either RX or Ign. due to high impedance? Now I'm really confused.

I use only nicd or nimh AA battery packs for ignition systems. Have been for the last 12 years or so. If the impedance mattered all that much none of my ignitions would still function and none of tjhe battery packs would work for very long. I have about 10 working ignitions and the ones that don't work are the result of a crash. The old stuff still works as good as anything else for ignition systems. AA's work just fine for ignitions.
Personally I moved away from nimh and nicd flight batteries a little after Duralite started up. Then went to Fromeco, and have now gravitated to A 123 batteries. I like batteries with a lot of capacity that don't weigh a lot. You can get all wound up in technicalities and specs but just look around for a battery that is easy to maintain, does not develop a memory, has a high capacity, easy to charge, and a high burst output. Factor weight into the choice and go with what feels good. For large planes nicd and nimh don't work out very high on the performance list for the flight system and you need D cells to provide any amperage. Heavy. You can use a AA flight battery pack but be prepared to field charge them frequently. In itself that my not be a bad thing since it forces you to keep track of battery condition instead of having a battery that can go all day without charging. I agree with Tom at Wild Hare about the balance. Before you fly it find someone that can assist in picking up the plane by the wing tips. Pull a string from tip to tip to mark the wing tube location. If it balances anywhere from the front edge of the tube to the center you're good to go for the first flights. The front edge of the tube will be slightly nose heavy. I did the first written review of that plane and know how it flies quite well. |

Ok guys I reblanced the plane a different way. Hung the plane by the wing tube guides. First picture of the level shows the plane being nose heavy WITHOUT the Rx batteries. (note I placed the canopy along the side)
Then I placed the batteries in the plane on the mounting plywood and the level shows the plane slightly tail heavy.......most of you stated this is where it should be. Hows that???????????? |

Well this past week I flew my Sukhoi for the first time. (took me till now since I built other planes over the winter to play around with first and the Cleveland weather hasn't been the greatest this year !)
WOW....the plane is a sweet flying plane.....lots of power, flies like it's on rails and just about lands itself! Set it up for the landing, watch it come right in with hands off and flair the landing! Nice aircraft and motor combo. |

Very nice build job. As others have said the landing gear is a bit weak. This also applies to the mounting plate. Inspect the plate carefully after any less than stellar landing. I've repaired and reinforced mine several times so far. Also consider trimming the canister outlet pipe back closer to the fuse, its begging to be bent hanging out that far. To improve cooling consider opening at least the lower set of louvers on the cowl with a dremel tool.
