Default Need Help With Brushless Motor and ESC Selection For Small Plane

I just bought a new E-Flite Edge 540 ARF plane kit and I'm pretty new with planes. I have a bunch of helis and have been doing that for a while but thought I'd give some planes a try. I need to get a motor, esc, prop adapter, prop, etc. Here's a link to the plane kit below.

The plane comes with a cheap plastic gearbox and they recommend using their E-Flite Park 400 brushless inrunner 3700 kv motor, and their 20 amp esc. The specs on the motor they recommend are here :

I found an on-line hobby store that has some cheaper stuff that seems it may be just fine for this application in the small plane. Their website is below :

Any way, I'm not familiar with all the numbers on the brushless motors and what exactly they mean. Or the difference between inrunner and outrunner motors and which esc would be best rated for an appropriate motor. I'd like a motor as close as possible to the specs of the stock motor. This will just be a fun plane not anything for trying 3D with so just a nice sport setup is fine. Should I use the gearbox it comes with or can I use something different?

I like motor mounts similar to this one and would rather use that over the stock setup if possible.

Anyone who knows can you give me a good recommendation for which mount, motor, esc, prop adapter and prop i should use. I've always used the recommended stock stuff before and am not sure what exactly I should use.

Any local guys to Utah that would mind giving me a hand?

Thanks for the help,

Doug Green.

Hi Doug,

I have one of the E-flight mini funtana's which are the same size as the edge (designed for the same power system). I would not bother with the supplied gearbox as they are pretty weak. For simplicity you can't go past an outrunner. I used one of these motors http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...utrunner_Motor and it fly's great. I used the X shaped mount that is supplied with the motor and made up some aluminium stand-offs to screw the motor directly to the firewall (2 of the stand-offs are shorter to give some right thrust). Works really well and has heaps of power on an 11x5 APCe prop (unlimited vertical). If I was to get another motor I would probably try the http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s..._23A_Outrunner(same prop) Don't know why. Maybe just because it is shiny and red...........

There will be heaps of other motors out there. For me something about 70g, rated for 200-250W with a KV of about 1000 is just about perfect.

Just one quick comment though if this is your first plane I would recommend that you get someone experienced to help you fly it. I fly heli's as well and they really are 2 different animals. The little edge will not be forgiving.

Good luck. I wish you great success.
