H9 Carden Yak 54 Turboprop

I'm new to Flying Giants and I'm very pleased with the large amount of information available. I just installed a Wren44 Turboprop in a new H9 Carden Yak 54 but after reading a few posts, I realized that there have been problems with the wing tubes. I'll do my best to inspect the wings but it seems that I'll have to be extremely cautious and avoid overstressing the airframe. I'll post information on the maiden flight which should be soon and maybe a few pics.

Gaston, Welcome to the Giants, and really cool project!

To put the wing situation in perspective, I think around 3- 5 people have had failures out of say 2500+ airplanes that have been sold. I think the percentage of failures could relate to pretty much any airframe.

I'm not saying to throw caution to the wind, but i think with a reasonable flight envelope (no high speed walls, or 100 mph dives into parachutes) you should be fine!

I really appreciate the feedback, I usually fly slow unless I'm flying one of my jets, I'll have to take it easy, especially when the engine has 37.5 lbs of thrust and the airplane only weighs 17 lbs, you could easily get in trouble but as I said with that type of aircraft, I usually fly slow, I prefer aerobatics over speed, I've had a BME Yak 50 cc for a few years and that's the way I fly it, nice and slow. One major difference is the throttle lag which I'm accustomed to, with jets anyways.

Seriously though be careful with a 100cc equiv turboprop on a 50cc airframe.

You're right as far as being careful but the equivalent is 75cc as published by Wren, still as you said, it's a lot of power but is recommended by Wren for a 50cc airframe.

That was one of the questions I asked Wren prior to buying the Turboprop and they gave me a link to a video of another Turboprop Yak owner with the exhaust installed as I did, there was no problem. They mentioned that the exhaust gases mix very quickly with the surrounding air eliminating overheating. I ran the engine for a couple tanks on the ground last fall and couldn't really feel any heat on the airframe, even on the leading edge of the wings. The reason I changed the exhaust is to avoid splitting the cowling in half for removal and installation of the engine or the cowling.

You'll be the only one with your set up for sure. That cowling must certainly help force feeding the turbine. Good luck and please post a video or at least some more pics. What a cool idea!

We'll try to make a video but it'll be a few weeks yet, we still have a bit of snow in some areas around here, I'll be glad when we can start flying. I'll take the cowling off tonight and post a few pics of the installation in the meantime, just to show how simple the installation was.

First I had to remove the exhaust and had someone make a couple of straight exhaust pipes with .010 stainless steel shim material and spotweld the pipes with a Tig welder, I haven't seen the bill yet but he's a friend of mine and doesn't want to charge me, I'll give him something for sure.
The installation of the engine was quite simple, I cut a 3 1/2in. hole in the firewall, made a laminated ring 1/2 in. thick on the left side and tapered on the right to give the engine right thrust, glued the ring to the firewall. I mounted the engine wit 6 4-40 blind nuts, made a hole to access the glow plug.
I had to install the ECU battery, the receiver battery, the fuel pump, the propane solenoid, the jet fuel solenoid as far as possible forward for proper CG.
I had a 50 oz. fuel tank made by Gary Mueller from Jet Tech, he does good work and gives good service by the way. The tank fitted perfectly under the fiberglass wing tube casing inside the fuse.
There was a lot of measuring and thinking prior to installing the engine and components, not because it's complicated but because there was no other installation to compare, you have to do it right the first time, well I hope I did.
