Default How to get the most out of an engine

OS .46 AX. Are there any upgrades for more HP? I have this thing for trying to get as much hp out of an engine as possible. I know there probably isn't a whole lot you can do but there surely has to be something. Mufflers? bigger carb? Higher nitro content?

Does the stock OS .46 AX have enough power to hover a 5-6lb plane on a 12X4 prop? Any way up the hp and spin a 13X4 prop?

Well you can take the baffle out of the muffler, but then, it will be louder.
Tunepipe can help you add 300-400RPMs, but that will be good to spin small props like the 12x4, 11x6.
Nitro, well that can hep you with the tunepipe, but i know that the limit for OS, is up to 15%, you can try adding more nitro but then you will need to shim the head.

With that being said,
That engine wont hover a 6 pound plane, i will go with the 55.

There is a small washer between the head of the engine and top of the case you can remove too, but it will not be enough to hover your 5-6 lb. plane. To get to it take the 6 bolts out of the top of the head and there it is. It should increase your compression ever so slightly.

If you want to enjoy your plane use the OS 55.
You can always use our advises to make your 46er better, but then its your choice.

i've been trying to instigate some of my buddies to get one of these...it would be a 'sleeper' .46...ken

BSE-76L shown next to an OS .46FX
Jett .76L is .10" taller, same bolt pattern, 10g lighter

Our newest "40" small block is our BSE-76L.
Similar in size and weight to many .46 size engines (OS .46 bolt pattern) yet with the power output of a .76 and capable of turning 14" props!
This engine is a bit different... As with our .60L and .65L, this engine is designed for lower rpm, larger prop applications making it ideal for 3D, Scale, Aerobatics and anywhere you desire to install awesome .76 power where a .46 was intended to go.
With the standard equipment Lite-Jett muffer, the .76 weighs in at a mere 470 grams (15.2 oz), a full 10 grams less than an OS.46FX!
Available with either our Lite-Jett or Turbo-Jett in-cowl muffler to best suit your installation.

I did get the tower hobbies muffler for the .46 AX. Haven't tried it out yet. I put the .46AX back on my Great Planes PT-40. I'm going to keep that plane flyable for when my son gets old enough to learn how to fly. I'm going to try it out this weekend if the weather is good.

I found a really awsome deal on a Saito FA .91 S. So thats what I put in the Edge 540T. That and a wood 15X4. I flew it for the first time last weekend. I had to take out the elevator servo and put two small elevator servos clear in the back, the CG was way off as I figured it would be. I also moved the rudder servo back and the fuel tank. That engine has tons of pull. Vertical no problem. I'm going to switch to an APC 15X4W because the guys at the field told me the wood wasn't very efficient and it should have been flying a little better.

just for the heck of it- What Edge are you flying? I had a fliton Edge, and (actually still do, but needs minor repair) it was a great flying plane with a .91 and I also for a moment thought about putting the .55 on it but had it on another plane.... Good luck & HAVE FUN!

Its the CMPro Edge 540T from Nitro Models. Its supposed to have a .46 2 stroke or .62 4 stroke. 55 inch wing span. Its pretty short for its size too. The Saito .91 pulls it along pretty good, unlimited vertical. Its a lot better with the APC prop. I just put new gaskets on the Saito and a velocity stack.

I put the OS .46 back on my Great Planes PT-40 with the Tower Hobbies muffler. Its louder, sounds better and pulls the plane pretty good. Not as good of vertical as the Edge but its ok for loops and stall turns. Glad I didn't use the .46 on the Edge, no way it would hover it.

Good that you chose the four stroke for that plane. they (cmpro) can be a bit heavier than others comparable.
Im currently kit bashing the 1.40 size Katana. and it's getting a 1.80 2 stroke Moki in it....

The nipple came off the muffler that the pressure tube goes on. I've got it JB Welded for now but have a Performance Specialties muffler coming soon. It was sounding pretty good with the stock muffler but should sound even better with the new muffler.

HI I LOVE the PT 40 trainner--have a webra 61 in mine--the SILVER LINE--an older 61 that has the power of the newer 46-52's of today--(but turns a little more prop --11/6 apc ) i got it in a purchase and have loved the way it performs from the first time i flew it--have many high performance planes--but that trainner is and can be one of my most relaxed days at the field-and there is a lot to be said for that--the plane flys fast--and will land at a dead stop--very amazing to me-some PLANES just fly better than the should---ENJOY REGARDS TONY
