Nice, you will like this combo! I can't tell, but did you move the firewall bolts? Nice job!

Nope.
I threw the engine in the mill and whittled .06" from each side of the mounting flange so that it'd drop in w/o having to relocate anything. Today I machine a new intake manifold and exhaust "header". woo hoo! |

Would a Saito 2.20 be too big for this plane?

I'm sure a 220 would work but the 180 sure seems to have plenty of snort with a 17X8 prop.
One question for you all though regarding fuel delivery. I have a three line tank. One to carb (direct) One to the exhaust to pressurize (direct) and one to a filler fuel dot A fourth line runs from the back of the crankcase to the outside of the cowl to serve as a vent. Here's what happens. When I fill the tank fuel pisses out the exhaust when it's full. Messy, but it serves the purpose. If I kill the engine with fuel still present in the tank it will siphon out the carb and make a real mess. My engine is mounted inverted so the carb is below the tank. The carb fuel line runs straight from the tank to the carb in the most direct manner possible. What should I do to stop this thing from bleeding all over the ground when its not running? Also, should I wrap the fuel line around the outer periphery of the tank one time to ensure the engine doesn't starve of fuel when in a nose down attitude? Last. I machined a new intake manifold for this thing and OMG did it seem to make a difference. I have a trumpet horn on the carb opening and the manifold is about 3/4 inch long. Just a straight piece. It took a little fiddling with the low needle to get the transition right but she sure snaps now and the top end seems to be a little better too. I know I give up some torque with a shorter manifold length but the midrange and top end really seemed to wake up. If anyone is interested I'd be willing to whip up a few more maybe. Cheers. Is it a straight manifold? I had always thought that the elbow manifold gave up a lot of flow potential. Got any pictures?

Yes, it is a straight shot. The idea was a velocity stack or trumpet like whats on a Sprint car.
I don't have a photo sorry. It seems to make good power. I did not alter the diameter at all and it's fairly short. I think a longer intake would help this engine for 3D since it'll pick up the low end and make for more snort down low. More to experiment with. |

One Question. Having a Saito 180 would you go for a sebart Katana 120 or a sebart Sukhoi 140 for a good 3D performance
