A big thank you goes out to all who made this event possible. This was my first IMAC event and I hope to attend a few more. I saw some impressive flying at all levels. A big thank you to Pedro Jordan Jr. for his coaching and calling and to Tomasita Reifsnyder for the accommodations. Hope to make it back to Georgia soon.

The First North Georgia IMAC is in the books.
What an adventure it has been. The idea and planning had started months ago. The week started the way it seems to for many contests, Mike Chandley showed up on Wednesday to get some practice in! I came out the field on Thursday and there were a few more folks there. Tom Riefsnyder and Kal showed up and Parker came in late. There were a few rain showers in the area, but the forecast for the weekend was still great. I made it out to the field by about lunch time to set up and there was already a great group of pilots at the field for practice. As the competitors can attest, the field was in great shape! The Friday weather was wonderful and by mid afternoon the two flight lines were several pilots deep for practice. Friday wound down with flying until it was too dark to fly. Team Cholesterol was up and running! For those of you involved in IMAC that don’t camp at the field, you are missing out. I can honestly say that visiting with friends in the evening is a big part of what “hooked” me to IMAC! We awoke early Saturday to a beautiful morning and were ready to get the contest started. Coffee and doughnuts were provided for the pilots and the flight stations were ready to go. Pilots meeting was a bit after 8:00 and the first pilots were in the air at 8:44. Advanced on one flight line and Intermediate on the other. We had 45 pilots and lots of flying to do! There were 11 pilots in Basic. I’m really happy to see that many in Basic as this is the future of IMAC! We had 13 pilots in Sportsman, 11 in Intermediate, 5 in Advanced, and 6 in Unlimited. My goal was to fly 3 rounds on Saturday, so we needed to keep things moving! The first round finished in 3hrs and 35minutes, and the dog fights were on! Lunch started around 11:30 with burgers and dogs and lots of homemade goodies. Wonderful thanks to my wife, Jennifer for cooking, to my son Tristan for baking cookies and brownies with his Grandma, and to my father in law for all his help! The pilots did a great job keeping things moving and we were able to get all three rounds in…. We flew until 7:10pm! And what a day, low 80’s, few clouds, low winds! We had a short meeting and handed out unknowns to some and others flew until it was dark! Again, Team Cholesterol was up and running. Beef Tenderloin, Fried bread, fried mushrooms, chicken, an amazing cake, some cookies… and the list goes on! As always Mike Chandley and Mark McClellan are the most gracious hosts for lots of great food!! Sunday dawned with another great day. Pilots meeting at 7:30 and it was time for the Unknowns, we started early at 7:55 and again everyone did a great job moving things along! Based on time, I had decided the night before after much agonizing and seeking many opinions, to fly an Unknown, a Known and a Freestyle on Sunday! The unknowns took just about 2hrs so we kept going and started right into the knowns. I cannot say enough thanks for everyone being where they needed to be! The judges did a great job and I appreciate it. There were a few that ended up judging multiple times and your dedication did not go unnoticed! The fourth round took about 3 hours and we actually finished ahead of schedule! It was freestyle time! We had 3 pilots. Kevin Garland, Luis Verdailes, Parker Gilbert and our special guest pilot Kal Riefsnyder. Kal is 5 yrs old and really doing a great job out there!! Well it was time for the awards. Basic class was won by Michael Abraira. Michael came all the way from South Florida and it was great to meet him. I do fear that we are all in a bit of trouble though! This was Michael’s first contest and he has only been flying for 6 months! Great job! Sportsman was a hard fought class with Preston Blake coming out on top. Intermediate was won by Kevin Garland! Great job Kevin. Advanced was quite a duel! Brad Petty took the class with only a 4 point margin in the normalized scores! Then came Unlimited, Joe Cutright was doing really well, but had a rough Sunday morning Unknown and was dropped from the running. When the dust settled, there was only 2 points separating first to third!! Jim Woodward pulled out the win! And freestyle was a tight battle too. Luis Verdailes wowed the crowd and took home the trophy. We then had the pilot raffle for all the goodies and I’m proud to say that every pilot who flew went home with something from our sponsors! Ron Storer took home an Extreme Flight 48” Extra with a power setup for the big prize! Thanks to all of our sponsors: Extreme Flight R/C J&J Tailwheels Emcotec Smart-Fly McFueler Sew Busy White Rose Engineering And a Huge thanks to my family for there support and help putting this contest on! See Ya’ll next year at Georgia Model Aviators!
