How about a hobby store that has enough room for about 5-10 tables. The space could be rented weekly for a reasonable price, say $20.00 and would be used to build your planes (arfs or kits). The nice thing about this is that the builder would have access to all hardware that he needs, and would be able to share or get advice from fellow builders working along side him or from the person running the hobby store. I think one of the reasons I don't like building is that I find it to be a lonely chore working alone in the garage, and when I need advice on how to do something, it is awkard having to stop and call someone. Even then it might not be clear how to do it since there is no one physically there to show you. We have a local hobby store where I live that has 1 table set aside for this. Just a thought.

It will fly!!!

I have always said that if I ever hit the lottery, I would do something like this only larger. My idea has always been (dreaming) to build an RC center. Start with a large piece of property add large RC plane flying area an area for Helicopters and an area for sailplanes complete with winches and high-starts. Then a couple of lakes one for float flying and another for boats with race courses laid out and marked with buoys. Add a campground with complete hookups. Then build a large building for indoor flying year round. Another building with a hobby shop, work areas that could be rented (caged so you wouldn't have to worry about your items), and a decent restaurant. Build storage hangers by the flying areas with both caged areas and large open areas for plane storage.
Finish it up with areas for RC cars and trucks. Outdoors a dirt track for the off roaders, a paved area for the road racers, an area with obstacles for the rock crawlers, then another building with all the above plus a carpeted track for road racers. Now all I need is a few million to get started. But in answer to your question. I could see a need for that kind of area if the population of modelers was high enough in the area. The only thing would be the hours that it would be available.

Friend did this at his hobby store (though it was for cars not planes).
What happened? Shop tools ended up missing or never put away. Guys would go to the store and get parts etc but forget to pay or simply have no intention to pay. You would need a store employee present at all times to make this work.

I think it's a great idea! Hey wizard, is always dreamed of doing something like that as well! Like an RC megaplex! It would a huge indoor/outdoor facility with a full stocked hobby shop, flying fields for planes and helicopters, racetracks both on and off road, and a couple of ponds for boats. It's funny that this subject was brought up, because I just happen to have a few million dollars laying around that I wanna spend;-)

Wizard, that would be a dream for rc modelers! I sure would love to have somthing like that near me. All we see going up around here are duplicate businesses, mostly shopping and restaurants...boring! You would think somebody with money would want to be creative and dream outside of the box.
Sweetpea, to rectify that problem the tools and hardware would have to be locked up or sectioned off in a separate area, but they would be available to be checked out, rented or purchased. It's all about how the place is managed or run. |

Why stop there? Build rooms with beds in them. Who says customers have to leave?

You left out the strip for the full size planes. You know at least a few RC'ers would like to show up in their full scale !

Rooms for rent take too many people to run. Now the strip for full size, just do like at Triple Tree and make the RC strip long enough for the full size!
