Many of you know my son Forrest just completed Air Force Basic Training and he's now at Tech School for a couple of months. WHile he's down in MS, good ole dad has the job of putting together his graduation present - one of our new OMP Extra 300 models. First off let me give Forrest some credit in helping me design this plane for OMP. Gump had some pretty good ideas along the way.
Here's the setup I'm going with: DA-100 on canisters Hitec 7955 servos all the way around except for throttle. Dual 2300 7.4v LiPo battery packs from DualSky MPI 6V regulators and heavy duty switches This is kinda weird since I'm the designer of this plane for OMP but I'll try to focus solely on the build sequence and introduce some tips along the way. Even though the new Extra 300 is designed for the 85 - 100 cc gassers and the 85cc motors are really popular, my 3W 85 is already taken for my Raven so tough Gump! You get your DA100 from last year! Here's a picture of the finished prototype model. Last edited by Salmon; 05-05-2009 at 10:02 PM. Reason: pic did not upload |

The first thing I did after admiring the carbon fiber landing gear was to get the fuse on its wheels. The main gear bolts to the bottom of the fuse in the typical manner. Make sure you have the leading edge of the gear forward! The cf gear is actually airfoiled. I always use a little blue locktight on metal to metal fasteners to avoid future issues. Once the gear is bolted on you can install the blue gear cover over the gear using the center bolt to hold it on. This gives a very nice clean look to the bottom of the plane. Next step is to slide the gear fairings over the ends of the gear. There is a slight asymetry (leading edge versus trailing edge shape) so make sure you put the left on the left and so forth. These are help onto the fuselage with 4 small wood screws on each. Predrill the fiberglass for the screws or you might crack the thin fiberglass! Next bolt on the wheel axles, slide on one wheel collar and secure in place leaving about 1/16" gap on the inboard side. This yields a pretty good spacing to align the main wheel in the wheel pant. So the main wheels go on next followed by the outer wheel collar. Again, I use blue lock tight on the wheel collars. Slide the pre-painted wheel pants over the wheels and secure using two machine screws provided through the gear and into the pants. I have found this setup to be very durable and no fiddling with rotating wheel pants over time! |

Holy cow VooDoo that giant Fusion looks awesome! Love that scheme dude. Have you flown it yet? Wild Fred sure does nice building work doesn't he!
I didn't get much work done on the big Extra last night due to other duties but I did get to play with my new HPP21 Hitec servo programmer. Nice using the laptop to do this! |

Just got home from work and getting ready to go work on the plane tonight. To finish up the landing gear you simply assemble the provided carbon fiber tail wheel assembly. This piece is light and stiff and should prove to last long after the life of the plane! Start by lightly threading on the nylon-insert lock nut over the wire pivot bolt but don't over tighten or you might snap the hollow bolt. Next, tighten one of the wheel collars in place on the pre-formed wire and slide through the bolt. Tighten the aluminum steering collar on top and then install the wheel and collars on the bottom of the wire. Pretty simple and standard stuff here. The assembly is screwed to the bottom of the fuse using three wood screws. I always thread the screws in place, remove, and then harden up the holes with thin CA prior to final assembly. I do this on all wood screw locations.
