Like I said in an earlier post, there was a reason for the thicker airfoil. It was changed around the same time Tony changed his on all the Daltons. But I do think the Aerotech rudder is a little thicker than the Daltons.

I just went out and measured the Dalton I have sheeted up and it is 1 1/2 inches thick at the widest part of the rudder, at the top.

How lucky can I get.......I am working a storm in Cedar Rapids IA.........and was getting the bug to see some big birds fly...........so yesterday I was on one of the threads and noticed the name Smokin was from Clinton IA............who better to ask were the big birds fly than somebody from IA........so I sent a PM to smokin asking were to go.......and with out delay He told me to come out to Clinton.......So today I did..........And was welcomed like I had been there all my life......So after about 10 min of getting to know each other I was thinking what a great bunch of guys. They were flying a couple of Edge 540's from Aerotech and I said I heard that these were great flying planes and thats when the bombshell hit.........Matt explained that they were the new owners and not long after that I was flying one of the edges that they were trimming out..........Man what a blast........It didnt take long for me to understand that this is a winning combo right here.........I know this group of guys will go to great lengths to make sure that we have the quality planes that we all desire. There will be an Aerotech YAK 54 in my trailer as soon as they are ready. Oh and by the way I allready bought Ken's foamy......

Thanks guys

bobby.... you are welcome at our field anytime! it is always a blast to put faces with screen names!

my plane was the edge. the plane that we were trimming and such was a many year old Velox Rev II that we bought off of a guy when we purchased the company. it needed a full strippin', fixin', fillin', sandin', recoverin' and all to be air worthy once again. it took about a month but we got her done! Even at 44lbs, this beast flies terrifically! the big 126" wing and long fuse are more than enough area to hang that kind of weight. our newer versions of this kit should be only @ 40lbs. so just imagain how that will fly! it was good to get another's opinion on that Big V before we got all of the mixing and so forth done! glad to hear you liked it!

anyway, we are glad to know that you felt like "one of the gang" at our field. i look forward to seeing you this weekend!

I have built 4 of the Aerotech 300's. The earliest model I built had a thin rudder like Ryan has mentioned and then the later models had a much thicker rudder with a much more pronounced airfoil thickness toward the leading edge. The thicker rudder definitely exhibited greater rudder authority but IMHO it caused roll rate issues when trying to fly rolling circles (IMAC rollers not rolling harriers).

thanks for the info dean. with our rudder having about a 1 1/2" - 1 5/8" thickness at the thickest part of the airfoil, how does this compare with each of the types that you have constructed?

All 4 planes have been sold to other fliers so I'm not able to measure one for you. I hesitate to give any numbers that I can't factually support. I can say that there was a very visible difference between the two rudder styles and that it wouldn't surprise me if the thicker rudder had comparable dimensions greater than 1 5/8" at the top. The latest of the 4 planes built was constructed about 2+ years ago so there may have been further design changes after that time that I don't know about?

These are very straight flying airframes that hold up well over time. Good luck with your new venture.

My son wants nothing more than to be a pilot and spends all of his time on the r/c sim and on the full scale sims when ever possible. Thank you once again Tim for helping to not only keep Collin's interest, but for building it to a level higher than ever before! matt...

our rudder is not "Thin"... it is just a mix between the two that have been used in the past in order to attempt to utilize both versions strong points while minimizing the weak points. i am certain that everyone will find that this platform provides tremendous stability in precision flight and unlimited authority in 3D manuvering.
