50cc for a newbie

This forum is full of info and my head is spinning from all the reading. After a lot of research I am probably going to go with a 50cc set up and was leaning toward a YAK but saw a lot of good info on the Extra. So here is the question, which airframe is going to be the most forgiving for a good first gasser? It does not have to do extreme 3-D since I am not even close to that ability at this time.

Not sure what you mean by forgiving but you cannot go wrong with any midwing Extra.

I should not say anything with all the gifted and more experienced thumbs available here on FG but in my opinion Yaks are more suited for slow than anything else and Extras are for clean lines and doing exactly what you tell it to do. But I have an Extra that can slow as well.

I like my Extras better than my Yak. In the right hands I'm sure it would shine but I favour airframes than can cut wind a little better, the Yak seems to get knocked around some where my Extras would not have noticed.

Well a Yak tends to fly a little slower while an Extra is more slick. The Extra is really the jack of all trades. Hard to go wrong with an Extra really.

I have a aw 260 50cc flys slow or fast. I think once u get to this size plane they justfly so muchbetter than a smaller plane. I don't think u can go wrong with either plane. Just buy a good quality airframe with good servos and u r going to have alot of fun hb

I agree if you aren't an experienced pilot then pick the one you like the best. Just go with something that is high quality, it may cost more but it will be less headaches for you later.

The AW 260 can fly slow. I had one with a DA 50 and it could be very gentle or a 3D monster.

There are many awesome aircraft on the market right now so basically decide which one you like and go for it.Whether you choose a Edge,Extra,Yak etc...the lighter you make it the better they fly.Any aircraft that is light has better flying characteristics vs a heavier one.If your looking for "Forgiving" keep it light and allow enough altitude for mistakes until you become comfortable to bring it down low.

I think for a first gasser aeroworks would probably be a good idea. The fact that they are so highly prefabricated with make your journey so much easier for the first time. The new edge 540 they have is awesome, and so is their extra 260m their extra 300's, and their yak. you cant go wrong with any of them!

Just pick the one you think looks the best. They are all the same for a noob pilot. I guarantee you will not be able to tell the difference between an Extra or Yak until you get more experience. The only thing you need to mindful of is wing loading, so choose an airplane with 1200 sq inch of wing area or greater. Typically anything with a 85" wingspan or greater will work.

The Extreme Flight 88" Yak makes an excellent first gasser. Two guys at my local field started with one and they were very happy. The landing gear will absorb not so perfect landings and the plane is very well constructed. It is a very capable airplane, but is also very docile on low rates. There is also plenty of support on the build threads.


Buy whatever plane you like and have fun. Be warned though, gassers are addictive.
