Bad-ass Super Contributer!
![]() |
I've got a DL 111. Will crank and run for about 15 seconds then dies. I can make it run right by choking it at about 1/2 to 3/4. I've takin the carb apart and cleaned it. I've taken the reeds out and inspected them. What else could be causing this?

do you have an open klunk in the tank or one of those filter things??? imm thinking you have something slowing your gas flow down. and try putting your needles back to factory setting.

My fuel line seems small but it's the same size tony supplied with the plane. I've run a peice of 5/32 from fuel to the carb and it does the same thing

is the tank vent clear??? are you shure the diaphram is in the carb right and the spring is on the correct side and the needle is adjusted right, not the hi low needles, the one inside by the diaphram. imm shure you put it back together the way it came apart but sometimes they mess up at the factory. look online for the breakdown and the needle setting. also make shure that little hole on that plate is open and in the right spot. keep me updated buddy imm thinking of getting one of these engines.

i put it back together the same way it came apart. I've been looking for a break down of the carb and so far no luck.

Scags,
It sounds like the diaphragm pump is not working. Could be a speck of pooh under one of the little flaps on the diaphragm or a dud diaphragm full stop. Your motor gets fuel with the choked closed because its sucking it in by way of the vacuum created in the crankcase but the minute you remove that choke it has no more fuel pump. The easy way to check that is empty the fuel line from the tank and without applying choke, flip the motor over and see if it draws fuel out of the tank. Another way is to rock the motor or bounce it backwards and forwards between compressions and again look to see if the fuel is being drawn down that fuel line. You should see it advance half an inch or so at a time with each pulse. |

it does not pull fuel while off of choke. So now the question is how can i make the diaphragm pump work?

Pull the pump side off the carby and clean it with some alchohol or a can of contact cleaner. Look to see if there are any scratches or dings on the surfaces under those two tiny little mickey mouse ears. They are just loose rubber flaps but they are the guts of the pump. They must seal to work.
Also be dead sure the gaskets and the reed block all line up so that pump gets the pulses from the crankcase. Makes sure the holes are free to blow through. Get used to the taste of gas as well while doing this. Make sure the gaskets are not torn or damaged as that vent line to the carburetter must pass those vacuum pulses or it simply wont work. I would be pretty sure something is out of line in the carb installation and your carby is not seeing thode crankcase pulses. |
