I put the cells in a container full of salt water and puncture the foil. After it stops bubbling and the voltage reads 0 volts it is safe to put in the garbage.
p.s. do NOT puncture the foil with metal object as this will cause the cell to arc. A toothpick or shishkebob skewer works well.

Try to recycle them somewhere that takes old cell phone batts, they are the same chemistry.
I even save up all my "disposable" dry cell batteries until I have a big container of them. My old nicads, nimh & lipos/lithiums go in there as well. No need to throw any battery in the landfill.

Hook them to a car battery and run.
No, don't do that. I have heard that the salt water method doesn't always work because it corrodes the contacts before the cells are fully discharged. Also, salt water, when electrolyzed, releases chlorine gas. If you aren't going to recycle them, drain them as far down as you can SLOWLY (with a resistor like a light bulb) until they read 0 volts, then connect the leads together (short them) to prevent bounceback, and toss them in the trash. When not on fire, they are environmentally friendly and can be thrown away.
