I have done two sockets so far, ran out of fiberglass material..

Here you see first the material used, then the wax paper on the tube, then the fiberglass roving.

Then the polyester resine, and the voila the tube.

As usual Roger pretty clever- wax paper for a tad of clearance and easy removal.
Jack n' coke to keep your groove on?
I just looked over a sample wing that uses cardboard type material. I think fiberglass is far superior and probably worth the extra cents for the upgrade of this often visited "connection" friction. The CB material was already starting to peel away from the edge.
Looks like 3 oz cloth?

When I did the socket for the 34 laser, I used only one layer of wax paper, and the tube is quite tight.

On this one I went with two layers, and its perfect. Now I can continued working on this wing panel and then start on the other one.
I still need to make two wing sockets plus another two fuse sockets.
Yes that's a rhum and coke.

Hello all
I called wild hare today and they can supply a extra 300 canopy that one can make do for the 40% Laser. his price was $40. So any canopy for a 38-40 percent 260-300 edge 540 etc will work well on the Laser.
Cheers
Jack

After fighting seasonal swelling in the cardboard inserts and weighing those heavy things I will never use them again.

This is a great substitute, easy to build, and is custom-fit to the tube and the plane.

Today, I put in a plug in the wing tube socket and installed one socket..
As soon as the glue has cured I will finish the shear webs, this will be one strong wing...

And after you have done one, it is an easy thing to do.
By the way, with the plastic gloves, you simply pour a bit of resin at a time and simply massage it in the fabric, I found this to be the easiest way to do it., Of course there are many ways to skin a cat.

Carbon fibre might have been a bit lighter, but also a lot more expensive, at this stage, its a matter of choice, as one is not better then the other.

Roger is right, I use the CF on mine and its not that much lighter. A lot more expensive. No advantage that I can see.

Just finished the shear webbing over and under the tube socket, and installed the plywood servo mount while the wing is still open.

Aircraft Spruce site shows 1 1/2" x .049" tube weights in at .268 lb/ft while TBM states their 1 1/2" x .062" weights 12 ounces, that's almost 5 ounce savings at a premium of $60. TBM states a savings of up to 9 ounces although the facts don't produce the same result? The net saving cost about $12 per ounce or $200 per pound.

WOW I didn't realise how little weight saved for such a large amount of money, thanks for the info.
