Okay Roger you get the 10th off for pic's so you can duplicate the work on the other plane but tomorrow is another day.

Dogonit Jack! I've now read every post on this thread and I got the bug. I want to build this as a 3D Laser. DA85 with RE3 tuned pipe. One Hitec 7950 (when they come out) on each aileron and one on rudder and 7955's on elevators. Spektrum AR9100 RX with softswitch only. A123 2300 mah packs on RX and ignition. Englarge rudder and elevators a smidge and make ailerons about twice as deep and closer to fuse. What do you think? Any problems balancing with the 85? My wife would kill me! Three kids, school and work just doesn't leave much time.

Hi Chris, welcome to the thread. Have seen/done 3d with the Laser, its quite capable in its current configuration, but anything can be improved. What you propose would be ok, I suppose. The ailerons can be enlarged span wise, the rudder is already enlarged from scale and is very adequate with boost tab. Get going, you will enjoy the light airframe, its an exceptional airplane.

Heres mine with alot of the mods you spoke of. It will spoil you really quick since they are so light. Mine has a 100 twin but you will have to really take some extra efforts to keep the tail light if using an 85 single. I also built two sets of wings for mine . One set is the tapered version and the other set are from the edge planform. The same wing just with a straight leading edge.
And yes , mine has boost tabs on every surface and I only use one servo on each of them. It just works.

Very nice Scott,

Do you think either you or Jack , with your experience with this design if a 50cc engine on the smaller 34% would work OK? My flying buddy helping me with some of the cutting on these airplanes is now getting smitten to build one, knowing I would help him on the way.

hey Roger

To answer your question Roger. Man will it ever. Ive built Alot of them and the engine of choice used to be the best on the market at the time. It was the sachs 3.2. Most of them came out around about 17lbs with heavy engines and nicad battery packs. With today's new powerful lightweight 50cc singles and really light a123 batteries Im confident one could be built and set up somewhere aroung 14 or 15 lbs easily. The key to it all is to hand select your wood by weight. A small scale is worth every penny when building from scratch or plans. I built about 20 or so without a single piece of plywood in them and none of them gave up the ghost unless they hit the groung. We even used cross laminated balsa for the firewall and l/g plate. It worked really well. Hope this helps and anyone can call or write anytime if they need some help with it.

Scott

We flew a bunch of the 34% Lasers 30 some years ago with Magnum 11 2.5 cubic inch engines. did not have to the moon vertical, but were the leading edge then. So yes the modern 50cc engines will work well. This is of course my opinion only.

Thanks for the infor Scott and Jack, I will pass it on to my friend, and hope he decides to build one, he would put the DL50 which has been working flawelessly for him.

Scott, when you say you build some of the 34% with no use of plywood , can you elaborate, I am interested to know more.

Roger

Yes Zoomer, the 34% is 98 inch wingspan. Gonna join the fun?

Although I haven't finished the other two wing panels, I will start on the fuselage, while waiting for the help to cut the wing.

Stay tuned

Ive built lots of large planes without heavy aircraft grade plywood Roger. Just use the 1/8 dense balsa that you usually put aside because its too heavy for sheeting or whatever and cross grain laminate it together and make your own balsa plywood. Ive saved as much as a pound on 35% planes many times. Use CA to make it . NO EPOXY. Works great. Also for the internals of your laser fuselage where it calls for 1/4 inch stringers ect use really soft balsa and strengthen them up with thin CA after they are glued in place. Replace this with the hardwood or spruce thats normally used. I used to do this with the wing spars on the 30% lasers I built in the 80's. Never had a single wing fail and we flew them hard . Every ounce counts. Hope this helps.

Scott

So this morning I cut the fuse stringers, and balsa sticks, and assembled them , top and bottom. Ran out of plywood, so I'll continue tomorow.
