Hey nice seeing you here, I made them out of Pine and they are 1/4" square..

I am trying to keep the weight to a minimum and don't have to worry about a piston engine vibration, with the use of the Turbo prop engine.

Every time I get into one of these damn "Laser" threads my juices start flowing. I just don't know if I want to get into a scratch build of a plane the size I want to fly. Which is 33-35%. And dadgum if this one ain't dead in the middle kinda sorta taking that decision between the two sizes off the table.

Does the 34% have built up or foam core wings ?

Perhaps maybe a smaller one for a trial effort ?

Hi Zoom They are built up and weigh about 1.5 lbs ea. readyto fly. You might want to check out Rogers 34% Laser build thread, think his wings were in this ball park. His plane was about 17 lbs. Onr thing is for sure, once you fly with light strong wings, you will have troble going back to the heavy type. Go ahead and build either one, you will not be disapointed.
Cheers
Jack

Mine and Jack's post's got me to re-read the first Laser build to look at the wing construction. Again.

I had completely forgotten that they were foam and built up. Twenty-three pages I re-read and I could not help but remember some smartass commenting on your lack of workmanship in one of your threads ONCE.

Obviously the dumbass never read the thread or threads. Not many make everthing. You go so much farther than most builders in making hardware, your own props etc. that I can only name a couple in the same league as you that are willing to do it all yourself instead of buying ready made stuff.

Good job Roger. Wish I had your time, patience, tooling and skill.

Thanks for the kind words, but all of this is not that hard to do, first I need patience to do things I don't like to do, so, no patience needed here for me, and the tools is an accumulation of years. Time I have because I am retired. Did the time with no early parole

Two reasons I make most of the things I do is , the hobby shop is not exactly next door, more like 75 miles away. and the second reason I love developing something new, its a challenge which is the best part for me.

Roger

Of course, I love to cut cost when I can and not cut on quality...

A bit further along with the fuselage.

Also you will notice the reason why I like building from scratch. Look at the Hangar 9 Sukoi. the engine is the EVO 80 but look at the amount of steel I had to put there to balance it out.
And the rudder servo is in the middle, nothing added to the tail. It weighs 29 lbs

WOW !!!!! Before I bolt all that weight on the front of the plane I would go with a bigger motor, might as well put weight on there that will add power and ballance !

That would have been the smarter thing to do. Why would you fly a plane with all that weight?

The point was even with a bigger motor to balance, it would still come out at 29 lbs,

true, but I had the motor and didn't want to spend the money for another one. Besides this one has plenty of power believe me.

But the point is, these arfs are heavy, New generations of ARF's are probably not as heavy, but building it yourself from plans, if it comes out heavy, you have one person to blame only , yourself...

My Dad had that Sukhoi on a DA 100. We ripped off the covering and removed the fully-sheeted turtle deck and the underside of the fuse aft of the wing, replaced the turtle deck with thin, light balsa, and replaced the underside with monokote. This alone took over a pound off the plane. After that it flew pretty well. Then it was shot down by an inattentive flier (still hasn't paid for the damage 4 years later, grrr...).

The QQ Somenzini Yak that replaced it is a significantly better flier, is larger, and weighs about the same.

We also had a plane based on a Hangar 9 Extra 330l on a piped ZDZ 80. It used the H9 fuse, cowl, wheel pants, a homemade 2024-T4 landing gear, but had a custom wing made from 1# foam and 3/32" 8# balsa with a spruce spar. Wing area was 1900 in^2 and the wings weighed just over 2# each (single JR 8411 on ailerons). Looking back I bet the foam rib design would make the wings even lighter.

New horizontal and vertical stabs were built from contest balsa and saved about 15 oz over the stock tail weight. The new tail removed the need for nearly 40 oz of nose weight, so a total of 55 oz came off the plane just by building a new tail. Total plane weight was 22# (again, on 1900 in^2 wing area).

I love the build Roger, keep it going!
