We ripped off the covering and removed the fully-sheeted turtle deck and the underside of the fuse aft of the wing, replaced the turtle deck with thin, light balsa, and replaced the underside with monokote. This alone took over a pound off the plane. After that it flew pretty well. Then it was shot down by an inattentive flier (still hasn't paid for the damage 4 years later, grrr...).

The QQ Somenzini Yak that replaced it is a significantly better flier, is larger, and weighs about the same.

We also had a plane based on a Hangar 9 Extra 330l on a piped ZDZ 80. It used the H9 fuse, cowl, wheel pants, a homemade 2024-T4 landing gear, but had a custom wing made from 1# foam and 3/32" 8# balsa with a spruce spar. Wing area was 1900 in^2 and the wings weighed just over 2# each (single JR 8411 on ailerons). Looking back I bet the foam rib design would make the wings even lighter.

New horizontal and vertical stabs were built from contest balsa and saved about 15 oz over the stock tail weight. The new tail removed the need for nearly 40 oz of nose weight, so a total of 55 oz came off the plane just by building a new tail. Total plane weight was 22# (again, on 1900 in^2 wing area).

I love the build Roger, keep it going!

Brett

Thanks Brett, and I love building it

My 3 year old Sukoi, is now my test bed for new servos, or new power distribution I design, new fiber Optics, things like that.
So I live with it, not going to modify anything, simply have to manage the landing because of the higher speed.

I will post more picture of the fuse later, got lots done today, gave the landing gear a slight forward angle to help from possibilities of nose overs on longer grass field. It will bring the wheels forward about an inch..

Hi Barrie,
I will be trying both sizes as a matter of fact, and see which will be the best combination.

Also you will notice the reason why I like building from scratch. Look at the Hangar 9 Sukoi. the engine is the EVO 80 but look at the amount of steel I had to put there to balance it out.
And the rudder servo is in the middle, nothing added to the tail. It weighs 29 lbs

Hi Roger Question, What is the box in the fuselage?

Hi Jack,
Could you elaborate, I'm not sure what you mean..

if you are refering to the box like on the laser, its the landing gear area as the fuselage is upside down on the table..

Roger

"All that weight" not onlly balanced the plane, it dampened vibrations of the engine, so in my opinion , it was a two purpose modification.

I see you are building over plans. Could you tell me where to get them. I just finished a old Lanier laser kit and already would like to build a bigger one.

Yes , the plans are from Jack Strickland, and he is on this thread also, he can supply the landing gear plus where to get the canopy and cowling...

More progress today, starting to look like a real nice airplane, I love the size. The airframe as seen in the picture standing upright next to the trailer, weighs exactly 3 lbs. Not sure if this is good or bad ..
