That is such a simple, beautiful, elegant plane. Great picture!

Glancing back through some threads, and for general info, I noticed that Scott Morgan's plane came in at 29# with the 150cc engine and ~27# with the 100cc. I LOVE light planes, gotta build a Laser of my own.

Don,
I have been quite successful getting my balsa from Trillium Balsa in Ontario..

Roger's weight goal is very reasonable for the 40% Laser, I'm guessing it will be closer to 26#. The first one I built was 28# with a Sachs 5.8 c.i. engine

I'm sure it will 3D now. The pilot should just wire up the controls directly to the boost tab. He might get a better "feel" when flying.

Leo's Laser directly inspired Walter Extra's EA-230 (almost a direct copy of the Laser Z-200 Walter was flying, with a slightly wider fuse and different cowl). The Extra 260 was effectively an "upgraded" version of the EA-230 with a stronger wing, "plastic" tail surfaces and ailerons (composite - CF, FG, and epoxy) that eliminated the need for tail rigging, and a highly modified fire-breathing AEIO-540 and 4-blade prop, though the basic plane still used a steel tube fuse and pine/plywood wing.

Can an Extra 260 3D?

The Slick 360 is a "plastic" Laser/EA-230 with some changes in the fuse shape. The Slick 540 is slightly larger with a more powerful engine, but using the exact same planform, layouts, and moments as the Slick 360 (and thus EA-230 and Z-200 and Z-230).

Can a Slick 360 or Slick 540 3D?

The "grandchildren" (Slick 540 and Extra 260) are seen as outstanding 3D planes. Handling characteristics of a plane are based significantly on the planform, layout, size, and shape of flying and control surfaces, as well as the overall weight of the complete airframe.

The Laser has the same layout, planform, location, size, and shape of flying and control surfaces as an Extra 260 or Slick 540 but with a different fuselage. Additionally this 40% size model of the Laser will weigh between 27# and 29#.

Do the math. 40% plane, ~28#, proven planform, proven structural design. There should be no question to any rational person that this plane will be a 3D monster. It is a well-proven IMAC design too. Personally I enjoy diversity at the flying field, too many Edge 540's, Extra 260's, Yak 54's, and Mustangs for my liking (though all are wonderful planes). This is why I will build a Laser of my own.

Jack, do you have a picture of the 4 Lasers you built for the '82 TOC? I couldn't find my RCM with coverage of that TOC.

Fantastic pilot Roger. Jaguar Bone makes incredible pilots, and is putting one in his new Laser. You might need to cut it down a bit for the scale look, or lower the cockpit floor. You want just the head and neck peering out obove the cockpit rail.

I'm sure it will be a 3D monster. But it wont be a 3D monster without the boost tabs. I'm cutting some in my Carden this weekend.

Does your Carden have a counterbalance at the top of the rudder? It is exactly the same principle, just located forward of the control surface hinge point.

BTerry,

Hopefully you know this idiot is kidding. REAL COOL.

Oh look, he's got a picture of himself hovering an airplane. WOW! Never seen anybody do that before.

Work has been going on in the back ground, but yesterday did little , and rather worked on my trailer installing an AC for future trips south. But not your average trailer AC What did you expect from me LOL..

I will post pictures..

In the meantime here is the covering I plan on using from Nelson hobbies,

http://www.nelsonhobby.com/covers.html

Its light , very strong, and paintable... but they do have colors...

Anyone used it so far????

Roger

Brett, I have a few of his pilots with the full face helmets but these are just awesome, you actually expect them to say something , that's how real they look...

I used it to build a Taylor Craft. I used the Neslon water base paint also. Good products, I never got the hang of masking off the paint to do a second color but the base coat looked very good. Takes more work then Monokote but it looks good when finished. Go for it.
