Default To fly or to study

Firstly I was just wondering how many uni students are out there enjoying flying? I am in my last year of study and only returned to my beloved hobby towards the end of my third year. I flew all throughout high school and once I moved to study at university the flying regrettably had to stop. All I can tell you is that, the years not flying were some of the most miserable and frustrating years ever.

At the moment I am slowly financing my first gasser. I have a couple of nitro planes. One has been resurrected from the grave and the other one built within the last couple of months. The reason why I wanted to start this thread is to share some of my tips and tricks to flying while studying at uni. I wanted help students who are trying to get back into the game and for those who are about embark on their first year of study.

1)The most important thing to do is get a part time job doesn’t matter what it is, it will really help; you can’t rely on parents and centrelink forever.
2)Especially within your first couple of years, you can’t sacrifice a social life. So go cheap and go nasty, you know what I’m talking about….. GOON! It tastes terrible but it’s very inexpensive.
3)Learn to effectively budget your money. For every dollar you have coming in make sure it can be put to good use. Always make sure you budget in your bills and rent, they are the main things you don’t want gone unpaid. Other budgets can be changed to help support your hobby, for example; occasionally I cut my food budge in half, so I can save the additional money to help finance new projects. Plus who needs food when you can fly
4)Apply for as many scholarships as you can. You never know you might get lucky and get one. Some can be a couple thousand dollars a year if not more.
5)One of the other benefits while studying and flying is you generally have free time during the week to slip out to the field and sneak in a quick fly by yourself. That is in-between studying .
6)If you live on campus good luck. I personally would wait until you move out with people you trust before flying again. My room was like a shoe box, there was no way I could imaging trying to hide a giant gasser in there let alone a small nitro sports plane.

Well this is all I can think of for the mean time. I hope it can help someone, if I think of other things in the meantime I’ll update the thread. Though if there are any University students or people about to head off to uni, within the next year, post a reply and tell me what you’re doing.

Fly hard people!!!

LOL yeah it did take a while to type with my gimp propeller bitten hand, sort of hurts to type lol.

The Ultimate is coming along slowly. When we build these foamies this week might need a hand from you and damo when putting this top wing together. I'm pretty sure i don't have all the stuff to do it, i really need to get some good clamps.

You know what would look good on the ultimate, a nice sparkly new DA 50 LOL.

Cheers, I'll come and get that package off you as soon as it comes in.

Keen for a fly tomorrow, if the weather holds out?

I was in the same boat....flying during my last year. It was fun but boy did it distract me. As a double major in chemistry and biology the amount of hours in class/lab and then study made it to where there was just not enough time.....so I slept less ! Graduated last year with all B's Lol

I would say, if you are looking to get into a professional school (medicine, law, etc) try to stay focused on your grades and away from the planes.....if you just need to pass the classes, have some fun flying !

Afterall, RC models beat watching TV or "relaxing" anyday ! Call it an extracurricular activity

WOW a double major in chemistry and biology, that sounds hard! I am studying Education becoming a Technology and Applied Sciences teacher. So i don't really have many hours per week maybe 15hrs at the most. Plenty of time for the most important extracurricular activity, then study lol. So looking forward to a proper income though bring on a 100cc bird lol.

Goon - passion pop - Dr Jurds jungle juice - mate a bottle of port or wine goes for 7 bucks!
If you need any spares, just give me a yell, Ive got heaps of left overs that Im probably not going to use now that Im moving onto bigger things.

Your situation is one of the reasons I emailed our club president to have a weekend auction - swap meet. Im sure there is heaps of older chaps in our club that would off load equipment or parts for a very good price. Would also assist some of the new club members who are starting out.

Gee thanks guys, its nice to know that you two care about my grades lol.

"Dr Jurds jungle juice" never have heard of that one Damo might have to track it down. I remember back in the day a bottle of passion pop only cost $4.50 now its a joke.

The swap meet/auction is an excellent idea. hopefully it will pump some fresh blood into the club or just bring some old models to life. I'm sure there is people around town just wanting to get into flying except they just see it as a huge cost. Though you can start out cheap and then work your way up. Plus we have way too many trainers in the club they need to at least move to a low wing sports plane lol. Speaking of old birds, Damo are you keen to try and have a dog fight this weekend? I'll get the yellow beast back in the air and i'll take on your profile. What should we use as a streamer?

Me and the missus had a very tight month this month, and decided to get a couple of bottles of passion-pop last friday for the hell of it...

Reminded us of the good-old days!
