Hi Rob B, This is how i reinforced my stab. I installed 1 carbon fiber shim on each side of stab, total of 2 ( 1/4 " wide about 10" long) - slit both sides of the stab around 1/4 " deep and epoxied it. it works very well.

You could also start from about 1"-2" up on the fin from the fuse. Drill 2 holes on each side at 45 degree angles into the fin and deep into the fuse. Then, you could dowel and cover holes. I just thought going from the top would be less noticeable. Make sure you use plenty of Gorilla glue. I wouldn't use epoxy. Gorilla glue will expand into the foam and I think that would be stronger.

thanks for the post cwhite. At least we now know what happened. I am fairly new to flying and have not built the nerve up tot get too crazy. I definately wont have to worry about anything caused by hard g's or tumbling. Other than hitting the ground I dont think I will be ripping any parts off. I just want a nice dependable plane to enjoy.

Well, I had my Vertical stab come off in flight at the Ohio Huckfest Friday. I was in knife edge and went to go back to level flight and it snapped right off. The construction of the fin is part of the problem. My fin snapped off above the base mounting plates and the fin trailing edge is really soft balsa not hard stock like it should be. The trailing edge stock is the only strength for the fin above the fuse. It should be hard stock not soft balsa stock.
Right now I am waiting for Kevin to find a new fin as this fin is all soft balsa and the fin and rudder were flopping back and forth uncontrolablly until I got the airplane down. Luckily I put the plane down in the tall corn and the damage to the rest of the plane is light. Had this happened at my home field I'm sure the damage would have been a lot more severe. In the end I will tell anyone buying the 50cc Extra to strip the covering off the trailing edge and apply some carbonfiber tape to stiffen the traing edge. Here's some pictures, Jim |

Seems like there's is too many big problems to have to deal with. I guess I'm gonna have to go another route. Man that is a big let down.

Hey Brotha,
Where did you get that pilot. It's nice to see a fully painted helmet head. |

Dietrich is no longer in buisness. Blaine Austin of Top Dawg Aviation bought Dietrich out.
