Default For those wondering about Royal Purple Oil

Yes, I'm like Mikey, I'll try anything.

Royal Purple. The latest in horse power increasing wonder oil. Or so some on FG would have you believe. ( WildThang, I am going to come for that 150 now )

Was running the finest Craftsman dino oil for run in on a new DA100L. 6 Gallons total.

Changed to the Royal Purple wonder lube and......................

Hmmmmmm.....

No extra power static. It might have unloaded a little more in the air, but nothing that makes me go WOW.

One thing it did do was knock the head temps down 30 degrees which is good, but made a heck of a mess on the bottom of the plane, not so good.

Did the mess on the bottom of the plane come from the tank vent/overflow during wild aerobatics, or are you saying this was excess oil. This was a problem on my planes till I ran the tank vent/overflow back to the rear of the fuse near the tail wheel. The problem went away. Just a thought. A reduction in head temps is certainly better than good, imho.

Hi Jack,

There is no mess forward of the tune pipe outlets ( rear outlets ), and there was far less mess behind them with the dino oil.
I've seen the same behavior ( more mess ) with other synthetic oils, especially those designed for racing. Given that I mixed it at the same 32-1, my guess is less of the synth is burning off.

As to running cooler, I'll try some of the other synths I have on hand and see if its a byproduct of the Royal Purple, or if its just that my run in oil was so nasty ( quite likely ).

Redline @ 40:1 does oil the plane some. I'll take a little oil residue rather than hard baked on Carbon anyday.

I've got a few quarts of the RoyalP and Bell Ray to get through, and then I plan on trying the Red Line.

Wasn't the Roayl Purple designed to be used 100-1?

I have been running Redline @ 50:1 (within mfg's recommendations) in both my DA 100's and 150's with NO ill effects on the engines that I can see and the mess is about half of what it was at 40:1. IMHO, if you aren't getting some oil residue on the bottom of the airplane, you don't have enough oil in the mix....

I know a few running Royal Purple at 100:1 and one at 50:1. One friend running it at 100:1 reported much better power than Amsoil, with similar head temps. After a while it started to run hotter than before, but richening it a bit solved that seemingly without effecting power.

32:1 is your problelm, period. Run it at 85 or 90:1. The get back to me.

Hi Tony,

The back of the can has a mix chart from 24-1 to 100-1. I mixed it at 32-1.

I have a sneaking suspicion that much of the extra power people see is the result of a change in the air / fuel ratio caused by the various oils viscosity and mix ratios.
I've seen it myself with Bel Ray, but when I peak tune the motor, it all equals out.

with a lesser mixture, i.e. 80 or 100:1 you'll see more rpm and power out of her. i like to run at 50:1 and stay there but the purple guys tell me i need to be at 100:1..... i love the purple, i just love it to the tune of a 50:1 mixture. i have NO greater mess issues with this oil and i know i have less carbon build up. it does improve the head temps as well. it's good oil.

I don't buy the "Less Oil = More Power" belief.

I just switched to Royal purple and had the same discovery you did. The bottom of my plane had to be recovered 3 times from the oil residue. This was TOTALLY MY FAULT!!!! This oil needs to be mixed no less than 60:1 and even so my temps are crazy LOW 160's in Georgia in JULY!! My 2 cents= stay with purple and mix it to your comfort level but not 32:1

Very little oil residue at 80:1. Happy with temps.

Same here not a trace of residue on the plane. 32-1 is way rich and you probably are burning off the dino oil carbon too boot. More power, I'm not sure because that's the only oil I have used in my DL. 80-1 is right there in my book, people resisted 80-1 when Bel-Ray cam out in the 70's we learned!
