Default Caslte Creations BEC or Fromeco Regulator?

Im finishing up my 72" span Cox Models, Pitts M-12 and have a couple questions. First, I'll tell ya the setup...

Castle HV-110 ESC
AXI 5345/14 outrunner
22x10 APC prop
Thunder Power 10S 4450mah lipos (22C / 40C burst)
7- Hitec HS 645 MG servos
AR 7000 RX

AUW should be around 20lbs.

Now, the question. What is the difference between a Regulator and the Castle Creations CC-BEC? The CC-BEC is rated at 10 amps, and the servos on this plane combined shouldnt ever draw that much. The voltage is adjustable to whatever I want (probably will run 6V to the servos), its lighter, smaller and simpler to use.

So, is there any reason that I shouldnt just power the RX/servos with a CC-BEC and a seperate 3S 2500 lipo? Would running a regulator be that much better? Seems to me that they do the same thing.

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Or just run the RX/servos on a two cell LiPo or 123 with no reg.

I talked to Hitec on the phone today. They said the HS 645s would not take too kindly to a 7.4v lipo run direct.

I also talked to Castle. They said the CC BEC would take the 7 servos with no problem at all. I have used them before with pretty heavy loads (my 13 foot span, twin electric, 70lbs flying wing). 8 servos in that, but I had them split between two RX's and 2 CC BECs.

I have had great results with the Castle BEC, don't hesitate to use it. It makes more sense to step 7.4 volts down to 6 rather 11.1 volts to 6.
What about a separate NiMh RX pack ?? If there are any issues with the power pack, you still have RX power. Just a couple of ideas, Great looking plane BTW.

Thanks N726. I had thought about a NiMh pack too. The less "stuff" you have in there the less chance of a failure there is IMO.

Weather I use the CC BEC or a NiMh pack, the power pack will be seperate. The 10S packs will only run the motor, and since I will most likely use the CC BEC, it will run off a seperate 2S or 3S pack. I have one 2S 4000 sitting here, but I dont know that I would trust that one. So, I will probably end up with a 3S 2500 running the BEC.

Thanks for the input man. Its nice to hear from more people.

I used the cc bec on a funtana 90 with digital servos and never had a problem. I always worried about a hot day though cause there is no heat sink. I dont think you would have a problem but with a 3 cell lipo I would think you would create more heat than with a 2 cell. I dont think that the small servo wires coming out of the cc bec can handle 10amps anyway.

On a Funtana 90 with digitals huh? Well, that certainly gives me more confidence. When I talked to Bernie at Castle, he also told me I could shorten the servo lead wire on the CC BEC a bit too since it causes a slight voltage loss. I forget the amount, like .01v per inch or something. Im more concerned about the 36" servo extensions though really. I may skip the connectors and just solder them directly. I feel safer that way anyway really. As for the BEC, I will shorten the servo lead on it a couple inches, and I'll put it a couple inches away from the AR 7000 RX.

By the way, are there "new/updated" AR 7000s? If so, are there any "necessary" changes to them that I might need for this thing?

I did learn today that there is a "fix" for the HV 110s with the big outrunners like the AXI 5345 Im using. On the brand new HV ESCs you can program the PWM freq down to 8 now. Apparently that is the hot ticket for the BIG outrunners. All it takes is the current Castle download to do it.

I think that a heat sink to these application will be a must and since the CC bec dose not have one i will go with the fromeco reg
