Curious to know how tight a plug cap should be. Should it be able to rotate freely or should it be completely snug. Is it worth adding additional restraint to make sure it's not moving like a tie strap or wire? The plug cap does snap securely over the plug but rotates freely.

as long as you cannot pull off the plug cap with a reasonable amount of force, you should be good to go. no tie rap

Mine are able to rotate and that is fine. As long as they snap on, you should be good.

The only deadstick I have ever had (gas) was because a plug wire came off in flight. Since then, I always use some method of security. At one time, I used .031 stainless steel safety wire twisted up to the engine mount. Now I place a small spring across the plug with the ends hooked to the lower set of cooling fins. It's a good idea to provide a little chafing protection at the point of contact with the plug cap.
It may be overkill, or just plain paranoi but it works, weighs less than an ounce, and gets a LOT of comments at the field. I try eliminate as many potential problems as possible. Murphy does the rest! Ken

One tip for removing a tight cap... use a flat head screw driver and gently twist/pry it off instead of just pulling it off with your hand... I did that once and wrecked the connection so I had to order a new Cap kit and repair it.

I got a lot of radio noise from a loose cap once. Now I use hose clamps. Maybe overkill but it`s cheap.

I use tie-wraps on push-on caps. Belts and braces system I know, but rather safe than sorry.

Experienced a bit of servo interference (mostly throttle, some aileron). Traced to plug cap not quite on snug. Now use a piece of safety wire to make sure it doesn't loosen up. Just drill a small hole in a fin to secure the wire. This is SOP for me now

I did use a hose clamp but it put pressure on the seam of the cap and split it open a bit and I was getting interference. Couldnt figure out how or why until I saw the gap in the plug cap. Now I use some wire around the very top of the cap below the retainer ring for added security.

My compliments on your job of using safety wire! I've twisted a hundred miles of it and enjoy seeing when someone does a nice job. It's almost like art to me!
