Default Pilot RC 40% Extra 300 Build/Fly

Hi all! Mine came in a couple days ago direct ship. Gonna put it together and fly it.

Specs:

Wingspan:

122 in(3.1M) Wing Area:
2790 sq in(18005sq cm) Fuselage length:
115 in(2.9M) Weight:
37.9 lbs(17.2kg) Engine:
150~170CC
I will be using my DA-150 on cans
HS-5955TG's on wings (6)
HS-5995's on Elevators (4)
Still deciding on the rudder....need comments there, want to try to use two high power servos.
Smart-Fly PE with Faast R617FS Gold dot
A123 -2300 x2 on flight and one on ignition.

I chose the above because I already have them, but feel that they are adequate anyway.

Here is a pic from the website. Any of you guys got one going and want to chime in I am all ears.

First order is to get it out of the hands of the shipper. It got here in like 3 days so there was little time to beat on the box. I put the delivery guy (a flight instructor himself) on the spot with the WrongWayCam

Sorry for the grunts and groans, I had a really swollen knee that I blew out the day before.

Suffice to say, the packaging was excellent and no damage was found.

Some pictures. Edit in...I like the addition of 1/8 inch ply on top/bottom/sides. Also the fuse was encased in foam top bottom and sides with the canopy and cowl attached and properly supported.

Good job Tony

More pics on the scale from whatever was in the plastic bags.

I especially like the main wheels and landing gear. Good looking quality and the gear is pretty light.

Yeah, been seeing the airframes at events and they are well built and light.

I am worried what to do with the rudder setup. It comes with the arms for a 4 servo setup and looks like they are pretty far forward to offset the 4 elevator servos in the tail.

Question for Tony. How do you think the ele. authority would be with....say, two of the new Hitec 7950's instead of 4 Hitec servos of less power? Also, what about distribution of the power of one servo in elevator position? The cutouts look like inside and outside, no middle position on elevator.

BTW I got a spare CF Spinner cut out for 3 blade, gonna get JC SuperProp to make me a wood 3B and then I can switch back and forward from 2b to 3b by releasing the one spinner bolt and 6 prop bolts. Gotta figure out what size is perfect because they have a different foot print than the common carbon fiber ones.....but still work great and quiet.

Early flights at the Nall next year will be whispers for you Curtis, to keep the peace don't ya know.

Wrongway, looks good. Is this your first Pilot airplane? You will be happy with it, Tony's got great stuff. We are using single 8711 on our 35% Yaks around here on rudder and single 8711 on alerions, both with great success, no blow back and no failures. I would think on yours two 8711s on alerions and two on rudder would be more than enough without adding uneeded weight. Keep it as light as poss. and it will be safe and great flying.JMO and keep up great build thread, I'm watching and thinking about 40% myself.

for me, I would like 4 servos. because we test the plane very roughly. but lots of people like one servo. usually install to the inside mounting which is near to the fuselage.
thank you.

i dunno if it helps at all, but it also depends on the type of flying. I have the 42% 260 from SD(i dont think it is very far off fromt he pilot 300) and im running 2 8711's on pull pull, and it seems really effective for both imac and most 3d. i do get blow back when doing high speed 3d stuff. manuvers. so thats something to consider.

Weird about the knee, still swollen but much less pain. Thanks Paul.

Thank you sir. Guess I got the servos and might as well use them.

Thanks, that's the kind of input about the rudder I was looking for!! I don't mind stressing the airframes at higher speed but not past normal rates....I save the 3D rates for lower energy stuff...

Goin' out to the shop to start installing servos....will up date with pictures soon.
