Find music with a good beat, and fly to the music(what feels "right") I know it sounds odd but it helps me.

Find the criteria for the event you are looking for. Don't just make up a routine.

An example of the criteria is here at the bottom of the page:

Note: This is not the criteria for all freestyle events, but is pretty similar to most.

I think Seth hit it on the head. It doesnt matter what your routine looks like if it doesnt meet the critera. You need to make it what the judges want.

I'm working on flying a reasonable freestyle myself right now. Here are few things I've learned by making lots of mistakes and listening to the competitive guys (who are usually more than willing to help, BTW!)

1.Don't plan a routine that pushes your skills to their limits at first. You need a set of maneuvers that *you* can fly with confidence and be able to do precisely and consistently. It's more impressive to fly your routine well then to screw up or crash out of any routine, no matter how cool it *would* look if you could fly it. I'm having a real problem with this, because while I can fly rolling harriers around the field in any path I want, I'm finding I'm not nearly precise enough to work it into a routine. Every maneuver feels different to me when it has to take a certian amount of time, and end up in a certain place. Much harder.

2.Don't use too much fast music. Sure, we can all hit points and timing at 140 beats per minute when we're on our sims at home...but most of us will never do it in the real world. Watch how the really good guys use music - they're not hitting 200 rolling points in a row flying to fast dance music. At my skill level, I'm better off at the slower end of the tempo spectrum.

3.As mentioned above - look at the criteria for the event! Decide if you want to score or just fly the lowest.

4.Watch the good guys. Again and again.

5.Think about wind. If you can only fly your routine in calm air, it needs more work. This has also been a problem for me.

6.Know your music really, really well. You are going to mess something up flying the routine, and if you know the music really well, you'll be much better able to either improvise a transition or pick up the routine a bit farther on.

Take my advice with a grain of salt, I'm a total freesyle noob, blundering along as I go, but I'm having a hell of a lot of fun working on this.
