I'm building my first big gasser, and the engine I'm using requires a 3s lipo at 11.1 volts for the ignition and says to use around 1Ah, or 1000mah. I've never used a lipo battery before so I've got a few questions. I will be using A123 batteries for the servos. For the ignition, I'm going to buy a regular lipo battery.
ARE ALL LIPO'S THE SAME AS FAR AS QUALITY GOES? Do you think 1500 mah would be enough to go about 8 flights without charging running just the ignition on a 116 cc evolution gx2 engine? I want to keep the ignition battery as small as possible, but IT HAS TO BE RELIABLE!!! Any recommendations as to which battery to use, or does it not really matter that much as long its a 3cell lipo at 11.1 volts and atleast 1000mah? The ignition unit runs through a standard JR plug so I'll be using all JR plugs, don't really know if that matters or not, and I'm going to be buying the FMA cellpro 10s for all my charging needs! Let me know what you all think! |

most ignitions dont require 9-13 volts, and that (I believe) is what you are referring to. However, the evolution 116 GX2 ignition requires a 3cell lipo or similiar battery between 9 and 13 volts. If a lipo would not work as is described in the manuel, then please let me know because I could also use a 3 cell A123 battery.

I've used Lipo's on the ignition for years, regulated when it needed it (DA engines) unregulated when it would support it (3W) and never had an ignition related failure. If Evolution calls for that much voltage, it should be fine.
As to how many flights you can expect.. I would go to the field with a fully charged battery, fly 3 or 4 flights, then go home and charge it... see how many amps go back into the battery. That will give you a pretty good idea of how many flights you can expect. Lipo's don't drop off as fast as A123's do, so just be sure to check your voltage before every flight and don't fly if you go below 10 volts or so. That will keep you safe. |

I just sold a plane that I used lipos on the Evo ignition and A123's on the rx. Both worked just fine however, if you have a good charger to use on A123's and can charge a 3 cell A123 pack for the ignition, I'd go that route just because of the faster charge rate at the field with an all A123 plane.

If your nervous about using lipo on ignition, why not have Fromeco make up a 3 cell lith ion pack?

Youll be fine with lipos. on Ignition doesnt really matter whos battery you use. I use thunder power 1320mah on my ignition and you could fly all day it seems but you could use one from hobby king if you want they have a grerat record too. I dont use cheap cells in my electics but ignition who cares. get a switch that has deans plug into the switch with jr out. I wired my ignition with an adapter from the battery to a jr plug into the switch and the small wire kept breaking. with the cellpro charger you will carge faster than A123 can, noone seems to understand this unless they have a cellpro. best charger out there it has a fuel meter you can see how much power is left at the field no need to see how much power goes back in to the batteries. if it says you have 40% left you have 40% left. I fly a 10min flight and my battery is down 2%. oh and lipos are lighter. good luck.

The Lipo will be fine. Make sure to buy a good quality pack and strain relief the wires. You don't want the wires vibrating around putting pressure on the tabs. I've had great results with Thunder Power packs, but I've had 2 cheaper packs develop a loose connection.

Thanks everyone for your help! I feel much better about using a LIPO on the ignition!!! I would love to save the weight over using a 3 cell A123 because that Evolution engine isn't exactly the lightest engine on the market! I will be using another switch between the lipo ignition battery and the ignition as my engine cutoff. Thanks again for everyones help! What switch would you all recommend using. I might have to check with fromeco to see what they say.

I use a Smart-Fly Optic Kill for the ignition switch. If you want a manual switch fromeco is the way to go.

I would get a 2600 black li-po from fromeco and use it with a badger switch. Am pretty sure they can make you one. they are just a hair heavier that a standard 2600 Rel-ion pack.
